I worked at Garnet Hill - Cornerstone Brands full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great cross communication - small company with big (but achievable goals).

    Cons

Company moved it's office, which forced a lot of good people to leave. There's a lot of new upper management now, who seem to be pushing the company in the right direction.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget what Garnet Hill was built from. Their roots are still important to the companies heritage and should be incorporated in their growth strategies.

I worked at Garnet Hill - Cornerstone Brands full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent money. Some decent people. Very close to skiing and the white mountains. Beautiful area.

    Cons

Very conservative leadership with no tolerance for much fun during the day. It's a production line based type of mentality and became very boring and frustrating for me. Same stuff, day in and day out. Was encouraged to not take breaks for dinner when asked to work after hours. Small town in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do. Social life in the area is horrendous unless you're a local. Don't expect to make many friends if you are from anywhere that is even remotely sophisticated.

    Advice to Management

CEO is no longer Russ Gaitskill but at the time I would have advised him to get better control of his management team with regard to HR matters.

    Pros

Engaged team members, strong work ethic, culture of innovation and transparency.

    Cons

Must be great at juggling an overload of work, prioritization skills are key to survival, as are communication and expectation-setting skills. President/CEO has been losing his way for a couple of years, as he struggled to find a breakthrough in business direction. New President is in the process of moving the company - painful for a business that has been in the same small town for its entire existence.

    Advice to Management

Be open to discussing the elephant in the room with your team members. The challenges the business is facing are not just external.

    Pros

the people. there are some great employees, and then there are some that won't change, which holds the company back from moving forward.

    Cons

low salaries, 7 months out of the year you are buried in snow w/subzero temps, the other 4 months are raining. no culture, no decent restaurants in the area. closest city is 2 hours away. promotions are rare. workspace is overcrowded.

    Advice to Management

move somewhere warmer, or at least closer to civilization.

I worked at Garnet Hill - Cornerstone Brands part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most of the people are laid back and very nice. Depending on what department you are, some of them can be really fun to work with, others can be nightmares. Nice small town setting. Professional workplace.

    Cons

Management can be corporate minded and petty. I know several people who quit because of personal differences, and others that were not hired because they didn't fit the mold. Lots of brown nosing is necessary to keep your job. Wages are pitiful for the majority of the company and their belts seem to be tightening every year, even when their earnings are at record highs. Not much room for upward growth, and workers are often doing the share of two, and not being rewarded for their hard work. Classic corporate structure. They don't seem to realize that paying their lower staff decent wages would make them better workers. They are one of the few employers in this area so they have the advantage that there will always be someone to take the place of an unsatisfied worker.

    Advice to Management

Higher wages for lower tiered workers. No more company meetings where you tell everybody how many millions the company made when, in the same year, you cut their pay. Verbally letting staff know what a good job they are doing daily.
