Company doesn't like to promote within

    Advice to Management

Take classes on how to articulate what you want and need from your employees and let them know they are appreciated for all their hard work

I have been working at Gate Gourmet full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This is a real-time business. The airline industry as a whole is all based in real-time, decisions you make in a meeting today will be rolled out in the units across the country overnight.
This pace brings out people's true colors, if you have the skills, knowledge and competency to get the job done, you will get promoted before you get a raise. Its just that kind of industry.
You will get 18 months worth of experience in 6 months' time. You will also get 18 months worth of wins/losses, which is why people get promoted quickly or wash out quickly.
This place is not for the faint of heart, its for the champions.

    Cons

Supporting a 24-hour operation at airports means you might have to come to work on days where schools are out for snow.
Medical benefits are competitive, but the focus here is on pay and opportunity. If you want great benefits at you might want to go work for a government and sacrifice career growth and your paycheck.

    Advice to Management

This is a difficult industry, but you guys make it fun. Lets have more office events, sports related and off site.

I worked at Gate Gourmet full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Not many...Good peer group to work with.

    Cons

No raises, costly benefits for a large Corp., horrible pay. No accountability being taken in Upper Mgt.

    Advice to Management

Treat your staff better and you will see the benefits, but unfortunately you try to drive production down the employees throats. Workforce knows the Upper Management (GMs & up) capitalizes from the business and does not take accountability of their mistakes. HR does not work for anyone but the Upper Mgt....look out. Mid-management personnel down are not provided proper direction, compensation, or the feeling of being a needed employee.

    Pros

Always being put to the test. Great opportunity to prove yourself and tackle unexpected challenges. You will never get bored. Go home proud of what you achieve each and every day.

    Cons

Very long hours and unreasonably high expectations! No work-life balance. Poor benefits package. Promotion and job security not necessarily based on performance.

    Advice to Management

Stop the political finger pointing and take responsibility for your own actions. Hire competent managers for the operating units and provide them the necessary tools to get the job done. Reach out to employees at all levels of the organization as opposed to isolating yourself and believing everything your immediate reports tell you. Definitely work on improving work conditions!

I have been working at Gate Gourmet full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Large company with many entry-level positions. College degree optional.

    Cons

Not a stable or well-managed environment. U.S. operations are dictated by European executive management, that neither understands nor communicates clear directives. Major airline revenue is highly sensitive to economic factors that will continue to create a cycle of hiring & lay-offs. Also visible is a distinct glass ceiling for women.

    Advice to Management

Provide more autonomy and training at the unit level to analyse metrics for better management of food costs and waste.
