I worked at Gateway Logistics Group (More than a year)

    Pros

Great stepping stone for learning the trade or industry.

    Cons

Long term employment is hardly available. The only way to stay in the company is to be a snitch or TRY to comply with all the manager is requesting you to do even if it goes against your morals.

    Advice to Management

Hire back most of the people you have fired and all of the people you forced into quitting. Lay off the long term people.

I worked at Gateway Logistics Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - You will feel in charge and important due to the amount of workload you'll be given.
    - No real experience needed to get the job. Most of the employees began their logistics career here and have never seen what other companies are like.

    Cons

    - Poor management and interpersonal skills are prevalent from the top to the bottom.
    - Very archaic way of thinking that does not work in today's business culture.
    - Office is old, dimly lit, and generally dismal. Yet recently they installed a brand new huge light up sign. This helps outline the mentality. Overall an unpleasant work environment.
    - Executives sit "down the hall" which denotes the mentality of Lords over their servants which is very similar to how the business is run.
    - Poor leadership and efficiency leads to greatly over worked employees where tasks are made to take much longer than necessary.
    - Low pay (have heard this may be, or has, improved)
    - As a previous review mentioned, despite multiple rounds of layoffs and et cetera, owner seems to always find a way to line his own pockets. Many long term employees have stayed for extended amounts of time being kept there by a carrot that they'll never be able to reach. For example: the one employee had been there 10 years prior to finally getting a promotion. If they weren't good enough to be promoted, they shouldn't have been in the position. If they were qualified, they should have been promoted.
    - At the end of the day Gateway operates to make as much money as possibly for the upper crust, while burning out the employees. There was a consistent employee turn around my entire length of employment, which was about 3 years. Easily went through 20+ people every single year, sometimes more. This is with a total employee count of around 50-60 at any given time.
    - "HR department" is inaffective.

    Advice to Management

    - Major overhaul of how this business is run. It's easy to survive when the industry is strong, the true test is when business is slow as it is now.
    - Hire actual quality manager level employees instead of people that talk the talk and can't back it up.
    - It would be recommended to not hire only people you feel will obey your commands, you need new opinions and ideas and not all "yes men."

    Pros

Nice people. Rank and file work hard.

    Good coffee.

    Cons

Lack of vision, no clear strategy, in survival mode. Leadership resistant to communication into the org. Line managers are in-grown and lack effective leadership skills. Significant resistance to any potential change or decision making. They have truly lost their way and ability to focus with no interest in defining core strategies to support a vision. Owners act in a rather pretentious way at times, worried about boats and bentleys.

I feel bad and sorry for those who remain....

    Pros

NONE that I can think of.

    Cons

As a former employee I was hired on under the impression that I would receive adequate training. Once I arrived my supervisor was to train me and was very reluctant. She micromanaged to the max, was clearly looking out for herself, and had a lack of communication. There are clearly too many people working at this company who have no managerial skills, and, although they may have experience in the field they do not hold a college education. When you are interacting on the phone and via email with the customers you would think your own supervisor would use correct grammar.
Additionally, the office is incredibly old, small, and unsuitable for a work environment. If you happen to be hired with an "assistant" title be sure to prep yourself for additional duties. Instead, of having the company let you focus on actual work, while a cleaning crew takes care of the kitchen clean up,you will have the honor of helping keep the office kitchen tidy.
Be careful of what you say or share with others, no matter who they are, as there is extreme gossip at this place and very little loyalty.
I would definitely be cautious of this company if you are ever considering working there. I've worked at other very reputable companies prior to having worked here, and this is by far the most unprofessional and uncomfortable working environment.

    Pros

great people, very friendly. Everyone knows who you are. Really good Christmas Parties.

    Cons

Cheap. The only time you get called into the office is to get gripped at. No "good jobs"

    Advice to Management

    pay more.

    Pros

Opportunities for promotions, to a short extent; No experience needed; Health insurance is paid for by the company for employee (industry standard).

    Cons

Low pay and long hours, if you want to move up; Mgmt has no issues with reprimanding employees in front of others; Overall company moral is negative; Quarterly Bonuses are promised IF "numbers are met", but they will not advice what those numbers are, nor will they inform the staff that the numbers were not met. One single bonus has been given since 2007; Very poor training. Assistants have rotating shifts cleaning the kitchen including doing the dishes - even after multiple years of employment.

    Advice to Management

Be more professional and respectful when dealing with employees; Listen to employees; Make it a higher priority to train at all levels of employment; Do not dangle the hopes of a quarterly bonus without actual intentions of giving them - Informing employees of the goal numbers and the status of reaching those goals each quarter - moral drops lower each quarter/year that goes by without bonuses; When employees are left on a need-to-know basis, they feel undervalued and irrelevant - Include them! READ AND FOLLOW YOUR OWN MISSION STATEMENT!!!

    Pros

Fully paid insurance benefits. You can sleep your way to the top with no problems. No drug testing. No experience needed for most job openings.

    Cons

Very poor management team. Dishonest and very rude upper management. It's all about who you know or whom your sleeping with to advance in this company. Greedy & very poor company morale. Goes through employees before you can even learn most of their names. Very poor training & very rude seniority. Unprofessional management & unsafe work environment.

    Advice to Management

Listen to people & treat them As human beings. Honesty is not such a bad quality to have. Sleeping your way to the top only works for so long. Poor management is the reason for poor morale.

    Pros

Gateway is a company that rewards loyalty and work ethic. You have a chance to move up in pay and job responsibilities. Hard work is rewarded.
Pay increases have a come yearly even during the recession.

    Cons

Sometimes goals for bonuses are not clearly defined.
Management sometimes may not be completely in tune with social media and needs of the newest generations of workers. However, I do see them trying.

    Advice to Management

Keep punching above your weight, as overall I think they have done a good job growing from a small to a medium size forwarder, and I think they will grow even more in the upcoming years.
