I have been working at Geek Squad part-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

The discounts and accommodations are great, they are very flexible with school, the experience you gain is amazing, pay is competitive especially for someone starting out in retail, and there is a lot of room for growth.

    Cons

There are a lot of changes constantly going on with the company in which one must adapt, it can get stressful if you work in a high volume store. Remember, you are dealing with broken down computers.

    Advice to Management

Management is great in the store i work. You guys always listen to my questions and concerns. You work very closely with your employees.

great people to work with, great for gaining IT experience

I worked at Geek Squad full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

      Great coworkers, interesting work environment.

      Cons

You dont do any actual computer work. Dont get into this job with the intentions of getting any usable IT/Computer Technician experience. The job is sales. You push memberships. You get abuse from customers and management rewards the abusive customers with free service, gift cards, and more.

      Advice to Management

Support your teams. Take care of the employees and they will take care of the customers.

I worked at Geek Squad part-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

Freedom to work on PC problems in a way that you want Culture that allows you to learn about new products

      Cons

Emphasis on selling, it can become difficult to sell certain services when you believe they are not needed Job is not confined to computer repair, you need to be able to interface with customers as well

      Advice to Management

Build a culture that emphasizes honest selling. If their is value in what you are offering, people will pay, but you need to be up front with them regarding whether or not they truly need it

I worked at Geek Squad for more than a year

      Pros

The only benefit of working at Geek Squad is if you are pursing a job in IT, it does help you to prepare for that. Answering phone calls, troubleshooting, and the ticketing system are all key points in IT.

      Cons

Management was awful, policies are terrible, the Nova/ETK system was a disaster as well. There were times when some Geek Squad employees were left alone for the day at the precinct, which left several customers unhappy. A single person cannot troubleshoot, answer calls, and repair computers. It is also unfair to the employee, who has to put up with angry customers for something that management was responsible for....

      Advice to Management

Have enough staff to actually keep the precinct running. Train your employees better. Use a better ticketing system. The Geek Squad supervisor should remain by the precinct, and no wander off on the sales floor.

I worked at Geek Squad part-time for more than a year

      Pros

This is a great place to get a feel for IT consulting, repairs, etc. If you are directly interested in IT, try to obtain an ARA (advanced repair agent) position. It is very entry-level, but if you have no other leads on jobs, its a great place to start.

      Cons

Having to sell plans and dealing with irate customers is not always fun. Not all repairs are done in store, many are sent to a remote repair location. Same with software repairs- many are hooked up to a remote-assistance system and taken care of by a remote team. Many of the clients come in for the cellphone exchange program, that Geek Squad manages.

      Advice to Management

Work with your team to find out where the most assistance is needed. Proper training in dealing with irate customers is important, as this is a large issue. Try to fit employees into their desired positions of work, as they will be happier.

I worked at Geek Squad full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

I really enjoyed working with Geek Squad . Enjoyed the knowledge and culture.

      Cons

The store that I worked out treated Geek Squad like second class citizens. Management was horrible. No opportunity for growth within Best Buy. At this store you had to kiss butt and be friends with management to be promoted. Working hard and being praised by customers did nothing unless you kissed managements butt. This location also underpaid employees compared to other Best Buy's in the same district.

      Advice to Management

Treat your employees better. Help them with opportunities for growth with in the company.

I have been working at Geek Squad part-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

flexible - ish - schedule, employee discount

      Cons

hours plummet during "off season" makes it hard for an adult to make commitments. Went from 35-45 ( for which i as still considered part time after 2+ months working consistently) down to 12 hours a week.

      Advice to Management

Stop showing favoritism, Reward those who earn it, give incentive to stay around.
