I worked at Geisinger Health System full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The healthcare industry is evolving and they do the best to stay current. Constantly hiring. Tuition assistance programs available. Transferrability to other departments. Promotion opportunity available.

    Cons

It is very much a "who you know" network. Nurses are worked relentlessly. Government politics are openly discussed. Pay is often less than the industry average.

I worked at Geisinger Health System full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good money and overtime. Attendings are usually very knowledgeable and supportive.

    Cons

Poor management. Some residents are absolutely awful, and the PAs just babysit.

    Advice to Management

Take some training on how to actually manage staff. Be kind. Encourage individuals. Offer some positive feedback, in addition to the negative

    Pros

-Flexible schedule (only if your contracted)
    -Friendly coworkers
-There are good restaurants in the area

    Cons

-You have to work on site despite being contracted, you have to follow the dress code, and follow all standard employee rules without the benefits.
-They will offer you a nice hourly rate but then you will be responsible for paying the taxes which means at the end of the year you can owe around 10k if you were working full time hours making your nice hourly rate not that great.
-You don't get any of the benefits. They basically hire contracted workers so they can treat them like regular employees but not pay the benefits.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees!!! You'd have much smaller turnover rate if you would just invest in your employees well being!!!!

I have been working at Geisinger Health System full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Amazing benefits, reasonable healthcare cost, vision, dental, orthodontics, wellness program, 401k, LTD/STD, sick leave, personal time off, and more.

    Cons

Little opportunity to advance, very political for job opportunities, little value for talented workforce

    Advice to Management

Providing employees with tuition reimbursement should align withadvancement opportunities. Obtaining a Masters degree should force a person to seek internships and employment outside of The organization. The Talebt Acquisition team should be available to all employees receiving tuition reimbursement to assist with employee retention during and after completing the degree.

    Pros

Nationally known for innovative healthcare, lots of opportunities to learn and add to skill set, good comraderrie among staff, good wellness program, great benefits, great immediate supervisor, who was one of the most knowledgeable people and greatest leaders I've ever worked with. Management pay is great, probably the best in the area. Staff pay is so-so, although I've heard it has improved for those lowest on the pay scale since I left. The organization definitely values its managers much more than its staff, although that may be changing under the new CEO's leadership. I think he is good for the organization but it takes a lot of time to change the culture of a 30K-employee organization.

    Cons

A lot of management are elitists who have no idea how the other half lives, limited opportunities for advancement, although that was mainly only in my dept. at the time and I heard it wasn't the same in other departments. Terrible department head, who basically ran my dept. into the ground. A very complex organization to navigate.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees and the job they do and be more focused on that and patient satisfaction rather than budgets and your own bonuses. Try to have some empathy for the plight of your staff rather than acting like elitists. Invest in the development of your and recognize them for their accomplishments in the form of promotions and/or greater financial compensation.

    Pros

Management expects way too much for $10/hr. Keep adding responsibilities without adding payment. Don't listen to what we have to say.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees! Treat us better and you'll get better work out of us.
