I have been working at Geisinger Health System full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Managers are approachable and friendly and make you feel welcome and able to bounce ideas off of and share information.

    Cons

This is a rural health system, so anyone not familiar with rural life would be in for a shock when applying and/or accepting a job.

    It's a big hospital system.

I have been working at Geisinger Health System full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Culture shift in last two years moving to more layers contributing ideas and identifying problems. Long term employees in abundance; teamwork is not just a word but an expectation and it makes everyone's job better.

    Cons

Still executive layers heavy, culturally older Caucasian men rule. Some salary ranges don't make sense. Still working to recover from direct patient care workforce reduction from 3 years ago .

    Advice to Management

Be ahead on benefits and salaries instead of catching up. Better to have a line of applicants to choose from than have good employees leave for local positions for salary and/or benefits.

I have been working at Geisinger Health System full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great company with great benefits

    Cons

Short staffing and lots of pressure for overtime

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great support, hire more RNs

    Pros

Extremely supportive co-workers and management. Very organized orientation and training program. Great benefits. OK pay. Lots of freedom to prioritize tasks and increasing workload as you got more skilled at your job. Always made the lower members of the team feel like their contributions were invaluable.

    Cons

Workload and independence depends on your project manager. Luckily mine was amazing and really allowed me to contribute to the study but I saw many coworkers being micromanaged by other PMs.

    Advice to Management

Pay could be better to retain workforce. High turnover due to better pay elsewhere.

    Pros

Great medical facility, Received Magnet designation for nursing.

    Cons

Often short staffed and therefore, too much overtime mandated.

    Advice to Management

Make nursing more desirable for your facility.

I worked at Geisinger Health System full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very PA-friendly environment. Physician's allow PA's to practice a comfortable level of independence in decision making while still providing plenty of oversight to ensure patient safety.

    Cons

Difficult, as with any large hospital system to keep up with the constant changes in policies and procedures. Otherwise, the company is large enough to be a leader in medicine, while small enough to not be a nameless face among others.

I have been working at Geisinger Health System full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Geisinger is a large hospital system and has many areas in which a person can work in. From nursing to research there really is a job for everyone here. The benefits and compensation are good and there is always room to move around and/or to advance within.

    Cons

The challenges of working here is the growth of the company which is moving 10 times faster than the people working here. Geisinger has taken over many hospitals within the past two years and the continued growth means, the need for more office space and work space.

I have been working at Geisinger Health System full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Tradition of chaplaincy and spiritual care stretching back decades. Chaplains integrated with healthcare throughout the hospital. Opportunity to learn in classroom and in practice from experienced professionals.

    Cons

Not much social life in North Central PA. Culturally about 20 years behind the rest of the US (though I guess that could be a pro as well in some ways)

    Advice to Management

Keep engaging the treasure-trove of ideas and ability of the many people who make the Geisinger System go. They are the real strength of this system that continues to evolve new ways of bringing great affordable health care to a rural area.
