I worked at Geisinger full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Very PA-friendly environment. Physician's allow PA's to practice a comfortable level of independence in decision making while still providing plenty of oversight to ensure patient safety.

    Cons

Difficult, as with any large hospital system to keep up with the constant changes in policies and procedures. Otherwise, the company is large enough to be a leader in medicine, while small enough to not be a nameless face among others.

    Pros

Benefits , compensation..but then again they OWN you.

    Cons

Driven by poorly informed administration. Values they reportedly endorse are actually NOT a consideration. Work employees as if on an assembly line without regard for welfare of employees or patients. Human resources and administration do NOT have.............. " your back" or interest in mind, instead continue to act as a "yes man" as they try to keep their jobs. A lot of exceptional employees on...

    Advice to Management

Do the right thing for employees and patients. Multiple mid management job cuts understandably may lead to concern for your future. If you have any self worth , you already know that relinquishing your own personal values is not why you went into this field and comes at a cost ( and I am not referring to financial). It is harder to do the right thing, but at least you preserve your dignity...which at...

    Pros

Decent benefit package Decent work life balance

    Cons

very low pay with high level of responsibility and little oversight Top heavy with managerial positions Does not concentrate on competitive wages for actual caregivers. Management positions, IT and ancillary positions are better pay and less stress. Needs to care for the actual caregivers. its a Hospital! If we are not here there is no hospital

    Advice to Management

This healthcare system would not function without Nurse Practioners and Physician Assistants. Some of us have been providing care for patients for years. We are these patients "doctors" We need to be treated with greater respect. Our pay wages are not up to par with national average. We are treated as replaceable so we will continue to leave creating a void and no continuity in care. Welcome to healthcare in 2017.

I worked at Geisinger full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Good money and overtime. Attendings are usually very knowledgeable and supportive.

    Cons

Poor management. Some residents are absolutely awful, and the PAs just babysit.

    Advice to Management

Take some training on how to actually manage staff. Be kind. Encourage individuals. Offer some positive feedback, in addition to the negative

I have been working at Geisinger full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Geisinger has utilized PAs and NPs for a long time, and utilized them well (this is changing). Benefits are very good--not exceptional--but very good.

    Cons

PAs are provided very little opportunity for advancement. Perhaps that is the culture generated by our profession as *dependent* practitioners. As the system becomes more academic in nature, PA autonomy has decreased; responsibilities that were once soley the PA's, are now within the pervue of residents and many of us have been relegated to support positions with responsibilities that are neither personally nor professionally...

    Advice to Management

This may be healthcare in general, but I have found in the many years I've worked with the organization, that service line leaders are chosen for the expertise, notoriety in their field, and academic accomplishment, but not on their leadership abilities or skills. Most know very little (if anything) about change management, human motivation or transformational leadership. Even the best seem to have an intuitive sense...

I have been working at Geisinger full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Good salary, cheap cost of living, the employees are terrific, good retirement plan

    Cons

Managers fear the higher ups, they do not support their employees. This year everyone was informed there would be a 5% cut in expenses and there would be a hiring freeze. The company also wanted a 3% increase in productivity. In response, I asked for more clinic time to see more patients but I was told there was not enough support staff to allow this to happen. How then can I increase productivity? Because of the anticipated...

    Advice to Management

Middle managers need to bring concerns of their employees to the upper management. Instead the middle managers do not advocate for the employees. They only act as spokespeople for the Geisinger leadership. If you are going to just parrot whatever comes from above, then I consider the middle managers expendable. Puppets are cheap to hire. There has to be opportunity for discussion between the employee doctors and leadership....

I have been working at Geisinger full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Very good salary. Cheap cost of living. Cheap housing. Surrounded by many tired fellow docs.

    Cons

Constant demand to work harder yet Geisinger cannot provide support due to constant cost cuts. Revolving door as many docs are leaving all the time. Many services have few available providers.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the doctors who make make 1/2 of what you make. Stop being a yes man to the higher level administrators. Stop thinking any doc who leaves is expendable and easily replaced.

    Advice to Management

Geisinger is buying smaller hospitals and expanding quickly. Please ensure that the "culture" is maintained in the newer institutions. Also, make an effort to retain MVP employees.
