I worked at GeneDx (Less than a year)

    Pros

Located in the Biotech corridor so it is in a good location. Free zumba and yoga classes offered in the cafeteria. Good 401K match. Very low stress job.

    Cons

Nepotism is ubiquitous and it makes everyone feel uncomfortable. Professionalism is non-existent. Folks in management seemed to have worked their way up with little to no professional training. There is no clear direct path to promotions. Extremely high turn-over rate. This is an hourly paid position so snow days require use of PTO; established since the OPKO acquisition. The company morale is undeniably low as well as the pay. No innovation to conquer the deadening aspects of routine; not a stimulating work environment.

    Pros

    -Friendly people
-Good benefits except for health insurance

    Cons

    -Extreme Low pay
-Health Insurance premiums are very high

    Advice to Management

Stagnant wage growth. Montgomery County's minimum wage is $10.75 and is set to rise to $11.50 in July. There is a new legislation, that would increase the county's minimum wage to $12.50 in 2018, $13.75 in 2019 and $15 in 2020. GeneDx increases our pay by 5% per year, that is NOTHING comparing to the minimum wage increases.

I worked at GeneDx full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It is not that far off of I-270 so the commute is not that bad.

    Cons

The pay is only 50-65% of what you would make doing the same thing at another position. When I look at employment opportunities I always inquire about the working environment , whether it is conducive to the continuing educative process and if there is open sharing of knowledge.....I was told that most of the senior scientists had an open door policy and that everyone is incredibly friendly. NOT SO, most of the people are arrogant!

    Pros

Medical benefits, they used to pay for insurance for a single person, now not so much.

    Cons

Where do I even begin. Serious favoritism plagues this company and makes it nearly impossible for growth unless you're in with the right people. Pay is deplorable especially for a company that makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year in revenue. Pay your employees a living wage! Workload was ridiculous.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the black holes in management and promote better suited for the positions. Including people who actually have degrees. How can a person who doesn't have a degree supervise over a department that requires every employee to have degrees for an entry level position?!

I have been working at GeneDx full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some great co-workers, although most don't stay. Most depts have a flexible schedule. Can get some experience and get out. Yoga and Zumba offered after work hours.

    Cons

No structure for promotion, people are often given the bait and switch when it comes to raises/promotions; workers are encouraged to work overtime or work around the clock if exempt, it will be a guilt trip if you do not comply; tends to be a lot of favoritism/unprofessional atmosphere across departments-I've seen many people try to get others fired and "build documentation"; extremely low wages for most positions; employees now have to pay for health insurance and holidays were taken away after we were told there would be no changes after an acquisition; high turnover rate due to hiring college grads and not paying them; the new snow policy is to not close the facility, but when it's so dangerous they have to delay or close early, employees have to make up the hours on their own time or not get paid, some employees are granted remote access and can work whenever around dr appts, kids school, inclement weather, ie never have to use PTO, but there's no structure to who gets remote access for the lower down employees (non- PhD, GC, management). Overall, it's been a poor experience here.

    Advice to Management

Take some advice from other companies with better employee satisfaction rates.

I worked at GeneDx full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible hours, Overtime is very accepted, Health/Dental/Vision Benefits, 401 K, Willing to train inexperienced workers, Weekend and Night Shift Differentials, Friendly co-workers, graduate school reimbursement options.

    Cons

Pay leaves you essentially paycheck to paycheck in a very expensive area to live. Moving up at tech or supervisor levels isn't very outlined. There's a constant pressure to get out the work on shorter time frames while compensation for the fact is often lacking. Would rather spend money on the moral budget instead of actually putting it in your pocket which is nice sometimes, but doesn't put food on your table or a roof over your head. There are flat screen televisions mounted all over the kitchen with cable, something that wasn't really needed and could have been better spent as a company pay bonus. Overtime while it is very accepted, is often un-avoidable and will begin to burn you out just to keep up with the workflow. You aren't a valued worker to anyone ABOVE your associate lab directors.

    Advice to Management

The techs are hard workers, the pay should further show that. The company is underemployed, underpaid, and sometimes overworked. The workers don't feel valued by upper management because they know that pay raises will not be given. Most workers believe upper management (not the lab associate director, but above them) do not desire to keep seasoned workers because then they'd have to pay them. They would rather people leave when burnt out and work for more pay elsewhere so they can pay another entry-level out of undergrad worker the same and just restart the cycle.

I have been working at GeneDx full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good co-workers, learn a lot the first few months, good health benefits.

    Cons

    1) Seriously underpaid. Like, I live pay check to pay check; can't save a dime because of how crazy expensive the area is and how little we are paid. 55% of my pay check goes to rent and utilities. The rest goes to gas, car/student loans (okay, those are my "fault"), and sometimes there's enough left to eat a few days each month. 2) There's no clear organizational structure. I have no idea how to move my lower level staff into middle level positions or what those positions would even be. 3) There are no clear cut, defined timelines/deadlines/goals for most of what we do. This makes it impossibly difficult to get anything done. Even if timelines/deadlines are set by yourself, you then have to wait an unreasonably long time (upwards of months) for the next person to do their part.

    Advice to Management

Increase the pay. Make bonuses actually worth working for. Salary increase too because they're so minimal you may as well not even have them.
