I have been working at Genentech full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility in working hours and working from home, employee focus, good benefits, nice people with a good pipeline. It is work hard and party hard atmosphere

    Cons

Flat structure, no proper pathway to move to next level, many processes to follow, one tends to get lost in the process requirements that becomes convoluted every year

    Pros

Benefits and Perks. They have huge parties and their financials are strong

    Cons

Poor Management and too many veterans who are "protected"

    Advice to Management

Eliminate more of the layers and fire more of the managers that don't perform and produce.

    Advice to Management

be nicer to your employees, treat them with respect, less busy work, be sensible and encouraging instead of inspiring fear and dread

"IT Organization where success is measured by the size of your pom-pon"

    Pros

    1. Good work/life balance (but definitely not as good in IT as the rest of the company)
    2. Benefits

    Cons

    1. Sub-market salary
    2. No clear development or growth opportunities or path in IT
    3. Leadership more focused on shiny objects than solid performance
    4. Cheerleaders are more likely to be recognized and promoted than solid performers

    Advice to Management

Changes in IT leadership as a result of Roche integration are definitely for the worse, not better. More changes will need to be made at the top level IT leadership to maintain a level of quality that Roche will find acceptable. It is quite ironic that the top IT leadership was recently promoted, while continuing an indefinite multi year long promotion freeze for senior non-management personnel. That in a nutshell should tell you how little confidence the IT staff has in their leaders today.

    "The Best Place To Work"

    Pros

Pros are easy. Good benefits, some what flex hours, ok pay rate but not enough to live on in SF, area.

    Cons

Hard work and dedication is not rewarded or recognized at the company by management. It's a good environment to work in if you want to get paid for basically showing up to work. Many people at the company do very little or nothing all day and get away with it because management has no clue or they're too busy trying to climb the ladder to really care what goes on. If you are good at promoting yourself and playing the political game you will rise to the top quickly.

    Advice to Management

Reward those employees who truly work and make the company the success that it is or was.

    Cons

Very demanding environment. Smart, assertive, and aggressive people are the ones who get ahead and do well.

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to work with people internationally, travel and work on global projects

    Cons

Benefits were cut, bonuses were cut, 6 - 7 am meetings most days and expected to work into the evenings and on email 24/7. No work life balance.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to make your new global environment work for your employees. You are burning us out and not finding any way to make it worth it for us to stay.

    Pros

GDS dept use to be a fun place to work, a lot. Of team building activities, etc

    Cons

Everything changed once Roche took over with their "operational excellence. They ruined a good thing by being overly confident in their assessment of the dept and what it did on a daily basis. I quote this from a Sr Mngr moments after claiming 50% of the staff will be laid off, "it's not about the quality but the quantity.".

    Advice to Management

Take the time to listen to your employees and stop
Being so arrogant. The dept doesn't run with too many chiefs and not enough indians

    Pros

The salaries and benefits were good, but are now being cut.

    Cons

Jobs are not secure, Swiss owners don't care about or respect US employees. Company only cares about making money, not helping patients or medical research.

    Pros

I like the job itself, helping patients live longer lives is very rewarding. Some of the people there are very interesting, knowledgeable and caring.

    Cons

There are some very knowledgeable, experienced supervisors. But there are some supervisors that are promoted to their position for the sole reason that they have relatives or friends in high positions. They are very ignorant and inexperienced on how to manage people. Or how to manage at all. This leads to many problems on the floor. Many of those abuse their power and use for their own monetary gains.

    Advice to Management

I think you need to hire more professional, educated, experienced supervisors. Listen to your work force, they are the ones on the floor everyday.
