    Pros

Lots of freedom. I was able to create the position and get involved with groups I wanted.

    Cons

Low direction and low pay. Impossible to live in the city on that amount.

I have been working at Genentech full-time

    Pros

working envrionment, employee benefits, diversity, stability, flexibility, work/life balance, open culture, nice people, so on and on and on...

    Cons

I don't think there is significant cons working at Genentech. Maybe the only thing is that you could easily gain weight working there.

    Advice to Management

Improve the level of employee engagement at all levels, create more opportunities for scientists and office employees to work together

I have been working at Genentech full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Good company to work for up to late 2000's

    Cons

    - Roche takeover in 2009
    - Mismanagement at low to mid level since then
    - Nepotism is rampant
    - Talk of work/life balance is just talk
    - Salary not commensurate with added responsibilities
    - Raises/promotions are few and far between

    Advice to Management

Keep your talent pool happy. Don't keep taking advantage of your talent by not paying them their worth. Continue to give them praise and reflect their salary. Employee tenure anniversaries are important; the least you can do is celebrate that.

    Pros

Great pay, benefits and work environment.

    Cons

Promotions are next to impossible to get. Internal recruiting process is sketchy (recipient often known in advance; interviewing more like kabuki theater).

    Advice to Management

    Clean up the cronyism.

"Not what it used to be. Beward of Device Development"

    I worked at Genentech full-time

    Pros

Genentech had a reputation for being leaders in the field. People there work hard and play hard. It really depends on the group you work in whether this is true. Like begets like, and it starts from the top. Some groups are tight knit, communicate well, and play nice with each other and those who interact with them.

There are more little perks than anyone will ever know of. Free admission to some museums. A concierge service to help with errands. The list goes on.

    Cons

Device Development management is constantly traveling and oblivious to what is going on in projects and with the people they manage. Most are petty and looking to only advance their own careers. They do not take their duties as managers seriously. Make one wrong move and they will make you regret it. This trickles down to co-workers who are also just out to advance themselves. It's very telling that most people (especially management) don't even say hi to each other in the hallways.

There is constant swirl in Device Development. Decisions can't be made or get rescinded easily. It's a never ending "alignment" between US and Swiss counterparts which ends up just being a power struggle. I've never seen people work so hard and yet accomplish so little. There are so many meetings, people have to work 50+ hrs a week to get their busywork done.

These may sound like generic criticisms, but Genentech wasn't always like this, and some groups still aren't as bad. Device Development has rightfully earned a bad reputation for accomplishing little and not playing nice within the company.

    Advice to Management

Try recognizing and listening to people below your pay grade more and fawning over those above you less.

Be honest and not condescending with your people.

Take reviews seriously instead of a perfunctory copy and paste job.

Spend less time on the dog and pony show and focus on being productive.

You're not so important as to not be able to get your own coffee, arrange your own travel, get your own pen, or find someone outside of the dept to babysit your rabbit.

People are not disposable and you should spend time understanding why they leave.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits - 401k, free shuttles all over the Bay Area, give-back concert, 6 weeks fully paid sabbatical, long term incentives

    Cons

Continuous cost cutting measurements and gradual changes in culture after merge with Roche, less innovative, lots of politics among middle management, no longer values end user experience and real business needs

    Advice to Management

Keep the good local talents, needs more innovative management, not management who only cares about cost cutting to look good on their resumes

I have been working at Genentech (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I've been given many opportunities over my long career at Genentech to learn and grow and be recognized and rewarded for my work. Benefits are excellent.

    Cons

I honestly can't think of anything worth writing here. I have no complaints, only praise.

    Pros

Take charge of your career. Find what you like and pursue it.
This is the best place to learn almost anything

    Cons

As in any large company, you may feel like you're stuck within a group, but because it is a large company, you can still work hard and find a group that will appreciate your strengths.
