I worked at Genentech full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The salaries, perks, work environment and the nature of the work are amazing. The people are wonderful and the amount of work you accomplish is huge. It is such a pleasure to work with smart, savvy and motivated people. It keeps you on your toes and allows you to contribute in meaningful ways.

    Cons

Positions are highly sought after so you really have to continually improve your education or your skills in order to stay relevant. That's great when you just hit the company with your degree(s) and your enthusiasm, but it's crippling once you find your "dream role" and want to stay put for a while. Seriously, if you are in a position for more than 2 years, they think something is wrong with you. There is no real appreciation of deep, historical knowledge. I am sad to know that excellence and expertise is no longer valued.

    Advice to Management

Upper management is terrified of the changes coming to the pharmaceutical marketplace and has begun the dreaded "belt tightening" that comes with fear. If they would reach into the talented, knowledgeable and motivated staff to identify and correct some processes, they could do well. But they spend their money on high priced consultants who spend years to discover and deliver information that is already known at the hands-on level. Too bad they will cut the people who can help them rediscover themselves. It really is gone, the Genentech spirit. Roche, the world bank that happens to run a pharmaceutical company, has completely taken over.

    Pros

Good, smart, collaborative people. Generous benefits. Opportunities to change roles within the company. Flexible scheduling and childcare. Team oriented work allows you to get exposure to various experiences. Sabbatical every 6 years!

    Cons

Global working hours can be very demanding (7am to late nights). Less opportunities to move up in some groups.

    Advice to Management

Degrees don't define skill level. There is some inflexibility for non-MD's to move upwards regardless of years of experience and skill level.

"Vastly inconsistent work environments between the various departments"

I worked at Genentech full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If in a well managed department and there are many, employees will benefit by getting well paid accordingly by your individual contribution and not seniority based, benefit from a fantastic company promoted practice for personal advancement with many career goal options and provide the financial means to obtain the training, degrees or certificates for your personal career path and goals. Wonderful team building events facilitated by third party companies as well internal programs. Great opportunities to control your end of year bonus and stock program by fulfilling start of year performance goals you and your manager create. The more impact you have on the teams successes, the more compensation you will receive.

    Cons

If you are unfortunate enough to start under the wrong management team in certain departments, there only a few, you will work in an established resentful work environment due to micro managing every decision to the extreme point that no individual can create or discuss with management a more efficient and/or a more cost effective methods to the already established routines and/or established decisions to common issues. New employees start at a very low base salary compared to the "better/ more of the company norm departments" which seriously affects the new employees to acquire proper compensation compared to the vast majority of departments due to HR's policy of how fast and at what percentages one can receive and at what percentage raises and promotions one can achieve. It is just better to quite, work somewhere else for a year and then reapply to a more acceptable department where the employees are treated as an asset rather than a plug to shove into a role that has already a fixed unchanging predetermined function you can't get out of while getting stuck with a demoralizing salary compensation that either annual increases of 1% to even the slap in the face increase of 0%. It would take years upon years to earn what should of been your starting base pay.

    Advice to Management

Consistent treatment of employees within different departments especially those that work side by side would create a working atmosphere that every Biotech employee prospects would compete for employment eventually becoming the major voice of company loyalty and the largest body of company advocates on various social media sites and forums.
