I worked at Genentech full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits including shuttle buses, free food, on-sight gym with free classes, on-sight day care, good travel policies. Good vacation time and flexible hours. Good 401K match. Good parties!

Science is interesting and cutting edge. Feels very academic at times.

    Cons

Salaries do not cover the high cost of living in the Bay Area. Little room for growth; internal promotions were rare and only for superstar scientists. Work can be monotonous at times. High pressure research environment with intense presentations every few years. Employees not allowed to regularly work from home.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within. Develop junior scientists (RA/SRAs) into senior scientists.

    Pros

Great Company even for starters. Takes care of its employees both perm and temp. Oppurtunities are always at a rise

    Cons

Oppurtunities are plentiful but, it is hard to get it unless you know someone.

    Advice to Management

    Better contract for contractors

    Pros

    - Salary and Benefits are very competitive
    - Strong pipeline of products

    Cons

    - Large base of lazy "lifer" employees, who make it difficult to get anything done

    Advice to Management

Seek to reward and create opportunities for dynamic individuals who could be the company's future, but without recognition will leave

I worked at Genentech (More than a year)

    Pros

I had the pleasure of working for Genentech in two different departments. I can say that my experience has been overall positive.

Employees are treated wells and get a wealth of perks. Employees tend to stay long term
Bus Transportation from many places around the Bay Area. It used to be free but employees pay a small fee
Cellphone and Internet paid by company.
Many many different company events. Almost at least once a month

    Cons

Politics and position jockeying seem rapant.
Big pharamecutical company tends to be conservative when it comes to new ideas and their rate of adoption.
New projects may be led but unqualified personal seeking to increase their status
Some projects seem to use too many resources in terms of personal and budget
Pay maybe somewhat inflexible. Job offered is given as is with very little negotiation.

I have been working at Genentech (Less than a year)

    Pros

The vast majority of people working there are kind and extremely helpful. Also, the full time employees would find away to get the contract employees to company sponsored events

    Cons

Working from 7pm to 8am could be very difficult at times. Also at times, there was poor communication between departments

I have been working at Genentech full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits (including long maternity leave), good team environment, flexibility with schedule, people are really passionate, intelligent and driven.

    Cons

A lot of politics around talent review and promotions; need to go through many hoops to change processes, implement new ideas and change.

    Advice to Management

Base talent review and promotion based on merit (and not on one person's experience)
