I have been working at Genentech as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Relatively flexible schedule depending on department you work for.

    Cons

Management can be distant and are thus disconnected from those of us doing the leg work. Lack of appreciation for the contribution by contractors, as a result talent is not retained. Even if you go above and beyond, there is often no intention of a direct hire scenario. Seems like an illogical business practice to let tried-and-true talent get away while having to always be training unpredictable temps to fill their shoes. But that's what Genentech has become, just another corporate model, getting further from the employee value system they've been known for.

On the other hand, if you are a "full-time" employee, benefits are pretty good. However, even the monthly afternoon gatherings and extras that employees used to be familiar with have gone down hill quite a bit in the last couple of years.

The work environment is ok. Has a tendancy to be cliquish, with a high school hallway atmosphere. Of course this isn't exactly unique, nor does it seem to be site-wide, however certain departments are pretty bad.

    Advice to Management

Don't let contractors be lead on for years with no intention of bringing them on full time. Retain talent, start recognizing and rewarding performers again.

I have been working at Genentech full-time

    Pros

Excellent training and exposure to medical industry
Good benefits for direct hire "blue badge" employees
    Oceanside facility is impressive
Opportunities to learn manufacturing staples such as Lean and 5S
Looks good on a resume for future jobs

    Cons

Contractor positions likely won't lead to full time hire
Being in the right place at the right time is more important for advancement than hard work
    Nepotism runs rampant
    Slackers are rewarded
    Gossip, politics, favoritism, backstabbing
Multiple slow, laggy software systems bottleneck production

    Advice to Management

Technical: implement improvements for software, listen to improvement ideas

Personnel: cut the nepotism, fire bad employees! Work culture is toxic and it is all avoidable.

I have been working at Genentech (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Really good benefits. Overall good people. Nice campus with amenities such as a cafeteria, basketball courts, volleyball courts. Lots of opportunity for lateral movement.

    Cons

Bureaucracy is inefficient. Computer/it systems are terrible and frustrating. Difficult to get in if you don't know somebody. Difficult to have any impact due to size.

    Advice to Management

Fix the business processes. Consolidate the number of IT systems. Employees shouldn't spend a good portion of their day logging into multiple systems to complete a simple task or training 3-4 times on separate versions of the same material multiple times per year.
