I worked at Genentech as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company has been around for a long time, lots of perks if you're an employee or an intern.

    Cons

Interns are treated better than contractors with the option to do many things and have the "blue badge" and can accrue their time there to use their "sabbatical" once they're working there full time. Permanent Jobs are offered to interns before they consider a contractor that has been there for 3 years.

Company takes forever to decide on anything and no processes are in place. Higher ups get to spend money frivolously and then panic when we are over budget. Then they cut the contractors who worked and did practically their entire project.

    Advice to Management

Realign and figure out which "permanent" employee is just dead weight and which contractors are worth converting to full time. Also, interns are just glorified teenagers who gets free cars and housing and does nothing all day but be on their phones, yet gets full credit when a project is done. Cut back on the internship benefits, it's hurting the company in the long haul.

I have been working at Genentech full-time

    Pros

Excellent training and exposure to medical industry
Good benefits for direct hire "blue badge" employees
    Oceanside facility is impressive
Opportunities to learn manufacturing staples such as Lean and 5S
Looks good on a resume for future jobs

    Cons

Contractor positions likely won't lead to full time hire
Being in the right place at the right time is more important for advancement than hard work
    Nepotism runs rampant
    Slackers are rewarded
    Gossip, politics, favoritism, backstabbing
Multiple slow, laggy software systems bottleneck production

    Advice to Management

Technical: implement improvements for software, listen to improvement ideas

Personnel: cut the nepotism, fire bad employees! Work culture is toxic and it is all avoidable.

I have been working at Genentech (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Really good benefits. Overall good people. Nice campus with amenities such as a cafeteria, basketball courts, volleyball courts. Lots of opportunity for lateral movement.

    Cons

Bureaucracy is inefficient. Computer/it systems are terrible and frustrating. Difficult to get in if you don't know somebody. Difficult to have any impact due to size.

    Advice to Management

Fix the business processes. Consolidate the number of IT systems. Employees shouldn't spend a good portion of their day logging into multiple systems to complete a simple task or training 3-4 times on separate versions of the same material multiple times per year.

I have been working at Genentech (Less than a year)

    Pros

Autonomous work environment with little micromanagement.
You get to lead your own project
Plenty of people willing to help you throughout your journey with great advice.
    Mentorship
Very friendly workplace with patient oriented mindset.

    Cons

Big corporation so your tasks are more narrow and specific.

    Advice to Management

I worked at Genentech as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Empowered on the team. Friendly, casual environment. Great work life balance. Even though the facility had 24-7 operations; few office personnel worked beyond 5pm.

    Cons

Monthly social events were only for full time employees. Contractors were left out -- in previous years, even for saftey- and holiday themed events. Last year, they allowed all employees to attend the safety event.
Few opportunities to 'convert' to a full-time employee. Lots of 'long-term' contractors; over 2 years.

    Advice to Management

Bring long-term contractor talent inhouse. They are helping augment your staff and are working toward the your company goals.
