I have been working at Genentech full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Smart people. Genentech has good cultural and ethical values. It has historically has tried to develop treatments for diseases that didn't have good or sometimes any treatments. The company takes good care of full-time employees (who aren't contractors) and benefits are excellent. It's a diverse company (with over 40% of leadership positions filled by women). The company is also mature: In a world of startups run by kids, it's nice to be where grown-ups are in charge.

    Cons

As with any large company, there can be too many meetings and bureaucracy. With diffuse stakeholders, it can be difficult to arrive at a good decision.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to break with Hoffmann-LaRoche if they're being too slow or old fashioned.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly staff. Nice cafeteria. Nice campus.

    Cons

There is no work/life balance. No opportunity for advancement. No effective management. No innovation. Lots of bureaucracy. I would not recommend Genentech to a friend.

    Advice to Management

Do your job! Inspire staff! Be present! Reward innovation! Less bureaucracy!

    Pros

Fantastic people, great ambition, amazing learning opportunities. There is never a dull moment. Work is always interesting.

    Cons

There is no work and life balance, the years of experience working for the company are not fairly compensated, Increased responsibilities are typically not rewarded financially.

    Advice to Management

Compensate the internal talent fairly. The green is not always greener on the other side. Productive faithful employees should be paid according to their abilities and market value. this is the only way to retain talent.

I have been working at Genentech full-time

    Pros

    Excellent salary for your job.

    Cons

Company changed noticeably for the worse when Roche took over. This is a simple observation noted by many employees, not a snide comment by a disgruntled employee. Many people left my department at this juncture or shortly thereafter.

I have been working at Genentech as a contractor

    Pros

Smart, helpful colleagues. The company provides the infrastructure to promote collaboration to meet goals. Flexible work hours, transportation assistance (buses, shuttles)

    Cons

As a contractor, I occasionally feel left out of the conversation. Working in this type of role, I have learned that it is important to be proactive in asking for information/updates that might impact my work there. Also, parking can be tricky.

    Advice to Management

Alleviate the parking problems (maybe add a few more buses to the schedule?). Encourage managers to reach out to contractors more often. Overall, keep up the great work!

I worked at Genentech full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good weather (sunny most days, which is nice) and ok cafeterias (food is not free nor subsidized). Nice campus. Easy parking on campus.

    Cons

Located in the Bay Area, which is way too expensive ( don't expect to be able to afford a house). Zero work/life balance. The Genentech culture is dead and is now the Roche culture. Salaries are average for biotech. Bonuses depend on the performance of the whole Roche organization (so called 'multipliers'). Senior management are totally AWOL. Mass exodus of top talent right now.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees better, the Bay Area is expensive!!!
