I have been working at Genentech full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Genentech is an excellent place to work. If you become a full time employee and are promoted to a blue badge the opportunities simply open up. Immediately you have incredible healthcare benefits, development opportunities, bonuses, and other corporate rewards. Even if you are working from home partially or full time you are supplied with great equipment including a sit to stand desk, high end monitor, and chair.... Genentech really shows that it cares about its employees and how they are doing. It strives to see its employees prosper, grow, and thrive. It is an excellent place to work and I look forward to serving here for a large portion of my life.

    Cons

At first Genentech can be intimidating. Being a green badge (contractor) and attempting to mix with blue badges (FTEs) can be difficult. FTE positions are fairly few and far between. But if one does come up you are encouraged to apply and are always pushed to take chances which is great. The contractor/FTE barrier is really the only tough part, but if you can get past that your potential is almost infinite. Even if... you don't get an FTE position and your contract ends, working at Genentech teaches you a lot of valuable skills.

I have been working at Genentech for less than a year

    Pros

As an intern, you receive all the benefits of a full-time employee.

    Cons

After internship, can apply for a contractor position only – GNE doesn't give out FTE to recent grads. May take several years to get converted to FTE/

I have been working at Genentech full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The hours, you get so many days off compared to any other full time job. Coworkers are amazing people.

    Cons

Never have a full weekend off, time spent not working on work days too little to get much done without seriously impacting sleep. weeks consist of work-sleep (X4) half week weekend on weird days

    Advice to Management

Things are very turbulent recently at Genentech. Through it all, the coworkers have been great (at least in SSF). Don't let your focus on hiring people that fit the genentech culture waver, IMO its the best thing genentech has going for it.

I have been working at Genentech for more than a year

    Pros

    - Lot to learn and grow depending on the team you work with - Contractors can convert to full time - again depending on team and your manager - growing products, really focuses on patient needs to bring out the products for unmet needs - Cafeterias, shuttles to and from train station, as well as great transportation system across bay and surrounding areas - (buses free for Blue badge, Green badge to pay a nominal... fee),

    Cons

    - Blue badge (FTE) vs Green badge (Contractor) difference is very obvious in almost every day to day tasks

    Advice to Management

    None

I worked at Genentech for less than a year

    Pros

Interesting and meaningful work, especially as Case Managers are able to speak directly to patients about their benefits. Really great pay and good industry experience right out of college. Great perks (like catered food and coffee) in return for early hours.

    Cons

Contractors ("green badges") do not receive the same benefits or treatment as Full Time ("blue badge") employees. Most of the career building and social events are off-limits for contractors, even if working in the same team. I found this difference to have a negative impact on team dynamics. As a contractor, it was also hard seeing those in your cohort get cut and have someone missing the next day without... explanation.

  6. "Not for Long-Term"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Current Contractor - Technician

I have been working at Genentech

    Pros

Good training program, there are always things to learn.

    Cons

Work culture is very toxic. Contractors are the ones who do the actual work, has science background, committed to learn and develop skills. Full-time employees often are the slackers who rely on new contractors to get works done for them, if you don't help them they will talk negative about you; these people didn't even go to college and got hired through connection.

    Advice to Management

    Don't hire people from referrals.

  7. "Welcoming, open culture!"

    StarStarStarStarStar
Current Intern - Pharmacy Technical Operations

I have been working at Genentech for less than a year

    Pros

Company culture is very open to informational interviews and everyone at the company is willing to talk to you about your career development and interests. You have exposure to such a wide variety of business functions and phenomenal talent. The intern program is well-organized and provides lots of resources to interns. Great on-campus benefits and perks. Free shuttle service and transportation reimbursement.

    Cons

The intern events only start mid-July/early-August, so if you're on semesters, you'll probably miss a good portion of the intern programming. Average (if not sub-par) pay for the Bay Area. Tech-driven development at Genentech is still evolving. Genentech does not turn its interns over into full time positions and there are virtually no entry-level positions at this company, especially if you have a bachelor's degree.

    Advice to Management

Recruit young, new talent. Open up more entry level positions.

I have been working at Genentech for more than a year

    Pros

The culture is great. Higher ups are breaking down silos and creating one functional business unit which allows more network opportunities to each role. There are constant opportunities to develop (as a full time employee).

    Cons

Its difficult to become a full time employee from contractor status.

    Pros

Very chill working environment and nice gym.

    Cons

Contractors are treated unfairly. While full time employee are off during holidays, contractor are required to work during those times at standard paid.

    Advice to Management

Value your worker more even if they are just contractor
