Great benefits but terrible culture and decision-making
Aug 18, 2021 - Manager, Corporate RelationsRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Benefits are pretty great but not as great compared to large tech companies in the Bay Area. Focus on patients.
Cons
People cannot provide constructive feedback. Feedback is either completely destructive or non existent. Leadership lack vision and the ability to make decisions bc of the layers of hierarchy and analysis paralysis. Most people managers aren’t in those positions based on experience and/or potential but because they outlasted others. It’s so decentralized, you spend most of your day talking to 20 people to find the next 20 with some piece of the information you need. There’s a complete lack of process or efficient operations. The average tenure is 10+ years and not in a good way. People get comfortable and find ways to coast because they have institutional knowledge and that’s their currency. OR they’re completely overworked and scared that their group will go through “transformation”. The company talks about its commitment to diversity but won’t commit to hiring diverse talent. Genentech leans into hiring many contractors who work just as hard as full time blue badge employees and can’t get converted for years. There aren’t that many entry level talent. Why?

Legal Dept

Flexible with working independently. Great work benefits and events to engage employees if you can get away from your desk.
Cons
Too many cliques already formed so hard to wedge your way through to get work done with the younger hires than the experienced ones. No room for growth in the position if there is no support from your team (which usually is the case where they don't want to lose you). Contractors are contractors for a prolonged time and hard to get hired on as Full time even if you do you great jobs.

The benefits are great and the perk are second to none such as the GenenBus.

The vertical movement is slower than a turtle. A decade between movements.

Great pay, Great managers, Great benefits
May 1, 2022 - Senior Scientist in South San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The benefits are great and the company really go the extra mile to show that they care about their employees. From free ferries to good health care the benefits here is first class. I feel very relaxed here and still doing top notch science.
Cons
Bad IT department. Loads of stupid HR trainings that don't mean anything. Just a complete waste of time.
