I have been working at Generac Power Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fellow employees are generally fun to be around and we work well with each other. Company picnics can be fun too.

    Cons

Everyone is disposable. All about the numbers. HR changes constantly. Extreme micromanaging. Pretend to care about employees but constantly lie about what they are doing to make our jobs safer and easier. Also they pretend to listen to employee concerns only to go in one ear and out the other.

    Advice to Management

We are not middle schoolers. Treat us with respect and like adults

I have been working at Generac Power Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people, modernized facilities, and good learning experience.

    Cons

Negative upper management. Its all about the V.P's and directors hitting there numbers to line there pockets. If numbers are low all departments have extra pressure put on them to perform. Lack of positive feedback, and the expectations required are often unrealistic. The company philosophy is to over manage and micro manage, this often includes verbal jabs and threats about loosing your job. Most of the employees in my department are currently looking for employment elsewhere. The dealer network is also burnt out on management putting pressure on them for more growth. The tensions in the air are so thick you could cut it like a knife thru butter. Pay is below industry equivalents, management has the attitude of "to bad there are plenty of others that would be happy to have the position"

    Advice to Management

The pressure starts at the top and trickles down. Management should be encouraging and motivating the employees, not belittling and devaluing them. No wonder so many good people quite or are looking to go elsewhere. Stop putting outsiders from other industries in leadership roles. They do not understand the customer base, so they just evaluate numbers and stress out everyone around them.

I worked at Generac Power Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You can easily live close by and avoid long commutes. They have a very difficult time attracting talent so it's possible to get hired into a job that is above your skill level. So this place can be a good stepping stone to advance your career.

    Cons

Lots of turnover, it's embarrassing. Changed supervisor 4 times in 5 years. Once your on payroll don't expect your salary to keep up. Negotiate high start otherwise you'll soon be below and the only way is to find another job. No advancement opportunities, especially in technology. Don't fall for the profit sharing bonus in lieu of pay scam. If they have too many openings they boost the bonuses 12 months before they launch a big career fair then they brag about the payouts. Once they have the headcount quotas met the bonus disappear. HR isn't forthcoming about this.

    Advice to Management

You definitely would save money if you learned to retain talent. Lost of employer reputation does end up costing you.

    Pros

Great insurance. Awesome people to work with and down to earth on the shop floor level. A place to get a start.

    Cons

Horrible management. Total disconnect from the director and manager level. Absolutly zero support. The company lost their focus and forgot about the low man on the pole.

    Advice to Management

Quit thinking about yourself for a change. Comunicate more thoroughly, and open your eyes, HR especially. People with tenure are FLOCKING out of that place.

I worked at Generac Power Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

For professional/technical ranks the management is decent and most managers treat their subordinates fairly. The benefits with respect to medical, dental, vision, 401K are a little better than average. If you have a good work ethic it will be noticed and additional responsibility will be yours.

    Cons

too much employee turnover and people who just "show up" and do the bare minimum to avoid being fired. Management tolerates poor employee performance (sleeping on the job, drinking right before a shift) as well as poor attitudes. Quarterly employee bonus is a farce, not paid out since Q4, 2013 however it is routinely mentioned to job candidates. Generac management purposefully anchors median compensation for nearly all positions approximately 20% below prevailing market wage,

    Advice to Management

To an extent, employers get what they pay for. If you want professional/technical talent that will help your business then expect to pay a reasonable wage to them. If you want mediocre employees then keep doing what you are doing. Further, treat ALL employees with respect on a daily basis whether they make $10 an hour or $100,000+ a year. Berating or belittling employees for something they don't have control over doesn't make them work harder or smarter. Provide your employees with the appropriate tools, training, and resources and let them amaze you.

I have been working at Generac Power Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You will never find a better group of coworkers. Lots of great people. Couple handfuls (the ones who make all the decisons) who are clueless

    Cons

Fair benefits. But this day and age, that is almost all you can ask for. 75% of employees overworked. PLEASE get rid of the ones who arent...or the ones who don't give at least a decent amount. Too many are surfing the web..coming in late...leaving early, napping, always sick. Etc. Need more restrooms

    Advice to Management

Open your closed eyes. It took over a year to get rid of a major problem that 99% of us knew was an AC from the first week. Maybe listen to the dedicated employees who truly care about Generac. Give us back the company that we were once proud of. Don't ship product that isn't ready to ship. Isn't that common sense? Pay People what they are worth...This week is a perfect example.

    Pros

Talented employees who are loyal and generous.

    Cons

Senior management is simple minded with narrow focus and start-up mentality.

    Advice to Management

If you hire the right talent, allow the leaders you put in place to execute. Culture cant shift solely by employee movement, it's a top down cascade. No one is empowered to do much of anything.

I worked at Generac Power Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Certainly a lot of good hard working people. Most are friendly and willing to help out to train and assist even outside their functional area. If you want to work long hours each week they will promote you though know with each promotion the responsibility and commitment get worse.

    Cons

Work life balance, salaries are lower than market, not clear goals - they pay lip service to goals though it is all about the short term numbers and bottom line at the expense of long term goals that can improve the business in the long run. Prime example is how they handled the implementation of their new computer system.

    Advice to Management

For senior management - treat your employees like people not numbers. You have a lot of smart hard working people that you are losing due to work life balance. Just because you choose to work non stop doesnt mean everyone else is in the same boat. Most are not compensated for the hours they put in as salaries are below the mid point for many positions.

    Pros

Benfits are better then some and amount of vacation, personal day given after probation period are better then most others.

    Cons

Poor pay to work ratio and bad management. Hard work gets you no better pay them those who fool around.

    Advice to Management

Higher pay is required if you want to keep employees especially when others companies are paying more for easier work.
