    Pros

Benefits. Pension plus 401k w/match. Good work plus tech.

I have been working at General Atomics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people. The work is interesting.

    Cons

The company is and has been growing rapidly for 15+ years. Managing this growth is difficult sometimes.

    Advice to Management

More communication would help. We have a matrix organizational structure but I haven't heard anyone actually acknowledge it, or talk about how to navigate the complexities of working in this environment.

I have been working at General Atomics part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's a good stable company with good benefits including 401(k) and pension plans. There's gym access, corporate discounts at different attractions and businesses like 24 hour fitness and AT&T.

    Cons

Raises are mediocre and mobility to higher positions is pretty stagnant. The company culture is bleak and there is a lack of age, gender and racial diversity.

I have been working at General Atomics as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

As a contractor I never have to work over 40 hrs/week, although several people on my team who are full time regularly work more than that. Fitness site available to employees, even contractors, including Gym, soccer fields, basketball court, softball fields. In process of building half-Olympic size pool and several other athletic facilities.

    Cons

Team members evaluated on sliding scale, ie someone always has to be at the low end, even if everyone on the team is exceeding expectations. Much better benefits for people who have been with the company a long time.

    Pros

9/80 work schedule, 7% pension, 401K match and very reasonable health benefits

    Cons

Company touts that it's vertically integrated, but silos exist in a big way; some portions of the business are treated/operated like a large business, others still have a small business feel.

    Advice to Management

    break down silos

Hard to move up within company. Always hiring from outside at higher pay.

    Advice to Management

Hire more from within. Promote loyalty.

I have been working at General Atomics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    -Interesting work
    -nice size private cubicles
-9/80 work schedule, 3 day weekends every other week!!!
    -Confidence in job security
-Great place to grow as an engineer right out-of-college
    -Lots of smart people

    Cons

-Pay is somewhat OK but tends to plateau with inflation based raises even with excellent annual performance reviews
-Talented people realize salary will jump by leaving company, saturating labor pool with lower performers.
-communication between functional groups needs to be standardized and improved
-Too much politics, creating headaches trying to complete the simplest of tasks = waste

    Advice to Management

Management needs to be more engaged with design projects to ensure engineers are given more freedom to explore all possible design concepts. Rushed time schedules with dictated design direction does not yield best design.

I have been working at General Atomics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay is good, facilities more than adequate. Benefits are commensurate for a billon dollar DOD contractor. There are good people here, though they are few.

    Cons

Evaluations. Stop basing the yearly raise on employment time / time in rate. Performance based evaluations are how you retain great employees.

    Advice to Management

Revise your eval system. Get involved with your people. Know whether or not the eval is truthful or just a load of crap. If you knew your people then this truth would be your guide. 20-30% of your ASI employees can't read a blueprint / use a calculator / use a scale or speak English. Aren't those prerequisites for employment and building aircraft, let alone military UAV's. Train like you fight or fail. Productivity would greatly improve as would the eval system and morale would reflect the change.

I have been working at General Atomics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Exciting product, leader in the marketplace.

    Cons

Hard to be a new hire here. Everything is learn as you go, processes not well documented.

    Advice to Management

Management heavy teams with little connection to the employees. They spend all their time marketing and attending meetings. Meanwhile the employees run amok.
