Good for some experience in Aerospace

Nov 8, 2022 - Design Engineer in San Diego, CA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Interesting projects, relatively stable contracts, good benefits.

    Cons

Company has very leftist values, wokeness is strong here. Colleagues pay close attention if you dont espouse similar belief systems - it will hurt your career growth opportunities. They made a very minimal adjustment for the 2021-2022 inflation spike but no where even close to the drastic change in cost of living here in SD. If you have to rent, youll be living in a dump. House prices have skyrocketed through the roof in less than a year. Same with everything else - Cost of living in SD is now outrageous and GA isnt doing anything about it. For new hires, its really bad news. Before you accept a job, really research housing costs and all your expected expenses for this area before you agree on a salary - in fact Id say negotiate very high, because once youre here, the bonuses and raises are negligible. With the current state of the economy and inflation, id say 2-3 years before youll be forced to move because youre falling behind financially.

    Pros

They have a wide range of positions available for you to jump into. Their PTO is better than anyone I know. LOTS of opportunities to shine. +Tuition reimbursement

    Cons

They have a lot of employees that have no motivation to move forward with their careers. But that doesn't have to be you.

A bit old fashioned and disorganized, but high tech and a lot of bright minds

Oct 12, 2022 - Research Scientist in San Diego, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Internal R&D budget is quite attractive for anyone creative who would like to work on some riskier projects that government grants wouldn't typically provide.

    Cons

IT solutions aren't great. A lot of old tools are being used in favor of more modern cloud based options. Even though the tools may be available and paid for, staff are unaware of their existence or how to use them productively. 401(k) vesting isn't great and only 50% on up to 8% salary. Pension sounds good but what is it actually worth?

    Incompetent software leadership

Jul 15, 2022 - Software Engineer in Poway, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - standard benefits - 9/80 work week - easy to get a job, but don't stick around too long because it will ruin your career - company never fires anyone unless there is a Reduction-in-Force (maybe that is a con).

    Cons

    - With a handful of exceptions, the senior-most software developers are incompetent for their pay grade and ignorant of industry standards and best practices like unit-testing, design patterns, distributed computing, agile development. They joined the company early on and got promoted quickly when the company grew rapidly, but their experience is 60-100% only at GA. Managers and directors are even worse. - No training and ineffective mentoring because of the above mentioned problem. - The software quality is so poor that maintenance costs are 3-4x the original development costs. Refactoring is not allowed because it reflects poorly on the original developer. Instead, the approach is to 'start over' without learning from past mistakes, which are carried over into the next generation of software. - No fact-based decision-making. Directorial decisions are based on prejudices or upon advice of their favorites instead of examining the facts. - No accountability for mistakes. Instead senior developers and managers are well-skilled in deflecting and defending criticism, deferring improvements, re-directing blame to maintain their status quo. - Real nepotism (it is a family-owned enterprise) towards family and friends. - Future prospects are poor. The primary customer (USAF) is unhappy with the software, cancelled contracts, and is no longer purchasing Predators; end-of-life is scheduled for 2030.
