I worked at General Binding Corporation as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good start to get feet wet cold calling businesses. Can't really think of any other positive aspects

    Cons

Lack of training, no selling skill development, outdated product, sales manager is a yeller who doesn't know what he's doing. He never even sold himself! No commission at all if you don't reach within 90% quota, which depending on territory is unrealistic

    Advice to Management

Stop throwing hissy fits when your team fails to meet unreachable sales goals. Try to figure out what went wrong and find a solution

    Advice to Management

Management needs to stop being cliquish.

    Pros

If you are starting out as a new sales rep this is a great place to cut your teeth in B to B sales. Extensive training and mentoring is what is very nice about GBC. They give you the freedom and independance that you will want and training that is needed for success. Woring with a young groups of reps is also a plus. Marketing group is very professional and can help to strenthen the value props for GBC sales reps. Awards, trips and recognition of a job well done is also a great plus at GBC. GBC also comes out with inovative products to help further sell a product that is consumamble.

    Cons

Over the years career advancement has been limited as the company has been aquired by ACCO. No longer have a fast track managment development program. Compensation over the years has become less competitivve and the politics of working at GBC sometimes get in the way of doing your job. Some senior managament needs to be shaken up as well. Fresh perspectives could be used in management. Over the years their has been a lot of flip floping on the go to market strategy that gets in the way of selling and confusses the reps. Sellin through distribution and direct sales conflicts are a burden to senior sales reps.

    Advice to Management

Listen to input from your sales team. Fresh perspectives could be used in management, figure out the direct and indirect channel conflict.

    Pros

They give you a great deal of sales training in order to become aware of their company style and expectations. Many opportunities for sales incentives and provide a solid base salary. Completely redesigned their go-to-market strategy and quickly turned a business going downhill into a profitable thriving company.

    Cons

Management would often micro-manage employees, causing that uncomfortable over-the-shoulder feeling. Accounts weren't always fairly dispersed among sales reps, or the quotas did not always appropriately reflect reasonable expectations.

    Advice to Management

Keep improving management techniques to allow employees to feel more comfortable working for company goals and develop giving better employee feedback for improvement instead of showing anger or disappointment. The right system is in place, just not always executed effectively.

    Pros

Great pay, good people to work with and good benefits.

    Cons

The middle and upper management team are only focused on the bottom dollar. GBC was the industry leader in document finishing until five or six years ago and the current leadership has no idea how to recapture the market. They are too focused on the immediate bottom dollar and not focusing on the customer enough.

    Advice to Management

    See above.

    Pros

good pay, good benefits, Managers care and try to be helpful. Industry leader with a good reptuation.

    Cons

Economic pressure forced company to outsource manufacturing to Asia, Accounting Dept to India and others. Many staff reductions 2010 thru 2012. Slow lead times for product shipping from Asia. Many companies no longer order binders or laminate. New UV print technology reduces the need for laminate.

    Advice to Management

Be realistic about the marketplace and shrinkage. Develop lower cost solutions. Offer faster credits for defective products. Too much data entry for a sales position will reduce sales.
