I have been working at General Board of Global Ministries full-time

    Pros

Global Ministries provides a great experience to serve on a global scale. They have relationships and partnerships all of over the world. Their work allows one to tap into a global network that activates to respond to immediate calamity and work with partners to strengthen long standing initiatives.

    Cons

On boarding can be minimal. Can be in seemingly perpetual transition.

    Cons

No team work. Work given for you to work independently and separately.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Loved having the opportunity to live in a foreign context and be part of the important social justice work supported by the GBGM. It was a fantastic experience and I learned so much about myself and the world from it.

    Cons

Being in a cohort in the middle of program changes meant that some things fell through the cracks.

I worked at General Board of Global Ministries (Less than a year)

    Pros

Non profit company for a great cause. They help relive disasters around the world that is a plus.

    Cons

High stress level due to their office is moving to Atlanta. Many managers micromanage their employees.

    Advice to Management

If you stop creating more stress the work would get done. No one needs to feel uneasy at all times! it's just not a stress-free environment.

I have been working at General Board of Global Ministries full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, really nice coworkers, great location

    Cons

Salary not so high (in super expensive NYC), but then again, this is a non-profit. And the benefits are great.

    Advice to Management

Thank you for being so supportive!

I have been working at General Board of Global Ministries full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

In comparison to other non-profit organizations, the salary and benefits are solid. For the most part, people are nice and friendly.

    Cons

Although the salary and benefits are good, for people seeking professional growth and an opportunity to learn, this organization is not for you. People enter at the position that they "fit" into and almost never move up so talented people never stay for too long.

Nepotism is rampant - if someone up high really likes you then it's easy to get perks and many staff are hired due to connections within the organization regardless of qualifications. As a result, executives do not know how to manage programs or budgets and are resistant to innovation. The organization functions the same way it has for years and will likely not change.

Well-qualified staff are overworked - for example, an assistant that does his/her work quickly and well will have more assignments piled onto their workload while slow/lazy staff are just left alone, ultimately reducing their effectiveness.

    Advice to Management

Hire people based off of how qualified they are. Just because someone is clergy does not mean that they will be a good manager - or require management training for all professional staff. Provide support staff with opportunities for training and advancement so that there is some sort of motivation to work harder. Don't punish good staff by giving them more work. Be open to innovation and change.
