I worked at General Cable full-time

    Pros

    Gym on site. Company cafeteria.

    Cons

They do not promote women to GM positions. They promote unqualified men over females. They let go (find a reason to get rid of) female Managers at a much higher rate than men. To the tune of 20 Managers, Directors and Vice Presidents in 3 years. The old boys club puts on a friendly face but is covertly hostile to women. The new CEO is a master at it. The health insurance is terrible 8k deductible before they pay anything toward a family's medical expenses. They got
rid of the pension and retiree medical and did not even tell anyone! Plus there is no work life balance!

    Advice to Management

Walk the talk. Show you care by improving the medical benefits. Promote qualified women.

I have been working at General Cable (More than a year)

    Pros

The company has the customer base to be able to make a good wage.

    Cons

Does not schedule employees consistantly, so you never know if you are going to work or not.
    Too much turnover in management.
This causes a lot of confusion and disorder.

I worked at General Cable as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The team is very safety oriented and friendly.

    Cons

I mistakenly obtained this job through a Temp agency due to the short commute. The job description they give the agencies they use is very easy to misinterpret by prospective job seekers.

I wasn't informed it was going to be very labor intensive and dangerous. I wasn't even informed I was fired after the first day by general cable but instead the temp agency (but I wasn't coming back anyways). The tools used to do the job are severely worn and inadequate. The logistics of the warehouse is centered around lots of unnecessary paperwork. I know my position is at the bottom of the barrel of general Cable and for less than a day, but I just don't see a future for anyone in logistic side within the first 30 minutes of stepping in the door.

I worked at General Cable (More than a year)

    Pros

Constant work if you are willing to work multiple shifts. The company offers great incentives to hourly employees and attempts to provide good employee recognition.

    Cons

No diversity or advancement for minorities. The core group of middle and upper management are very prejudice towards minorities. Not providing minorities with the same training opportunities as their other counterparts.

    Advice to Management

Diversity for promotions should be all inclusive.

I have been working at General Cable full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    1. Free parking
    2. Free coffee
    3. Free gym

    Cons

    Lack of Leadership: Everyone outside of General Cable is familiar with the results; restated 10-K’s, poor internal controls that resulted in a massive fraud in Brazil and bribing of officials that resulted in violations of the foreign corrupt practices act. How did all of this happen over the last few years? Easy, poor leadership at the VP and Executive VP levels. The poor leadership is particularly bad in the Global Controller and CFO roles. Their incompetence has resulted in these problems for which General Cable has never been able to rebound from. So how do they demonstrate their incompetence? Let me count the ways;
    (1) lack of technical skills – If you enjoy that deer-in-the-headlights look from your boss when you pose a technical question to them, then General Cable’s finance departments are the place for you.
    (2) lack of engagement with their direct reports and other departments.
    (3) fear of decision making: I’ve never seen a collective group of adults pee down their legs as frequently as the VPs and Executive VPs do when they are faced with making a decision.

    Advice to Management

The lot of you should find different careers.

I worked at General Cable full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Constant turnover will give you lots of opportunities to grow professionally. Lack of vision will allow you to contribute to a shrinking business. Middle management is good to work with, but they are overshadowed by an overall lack of leadership at the top.

    Cons

Leadership's unethical and autocratic management style goes unchecked. The further along in your career you are, the less of an option General Cable becomes.

    Advice to Management

    Nothing- you are the problem.

    Pros

    Diverse and international. Fiscally conservative.

    Cons

Matrix organization makes it tough to innovate. New CEO is familiar with this and is addressing.

    Advice to Management

Change the incentive plans to nurture collaboration across matrix.

I have been working at General Cable full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay if you don't have a college degree, decent real world job training, and easy to get hired on because of the extremely high turnover rate.

    Cons

Terrible work environment, lack of care about safety, management is greedy and cares only about themselves, extremely high turnover rate because management can't treat employees properly, and you have to be a management favorite to progress.

    Advice to Management

Learn to appreciate the talent you have and work to get your people raises. You have people busting their tails day in and day out, giving all their time to your company due to the high demand for overtime, and you treat them like trash, don't like to give them benefits, and fight to avoid giving them a raise.

I have been working at General Cable full-time

    Pros

Salary but at some point you have to make a better decision.

    Cons

Unethical work practices. Union and staff relationship is caustic whic creates havoc.

    Advice to Management

At some point ... Let's get real. This company is unable to retain talent (ask how many people have resigned the last 12-months) because team work concepts do not exist.
