Too big for its own good?

      Pros

GDIT is a huge corporation with over 100,000 employees, and I can speak of only one small part of it. Its size provides plenty of opportunities. The project on which I was engaged actually encouraged working from home, even in the days prior to COVID. Salaries and benefits are generally competitive with other federal contractors.

      Cons

The sheer size of the corporation means you will be a small cog in a large operation. Coupled with working from home, this means you will be invisible to management. Everything is driven by project management. Yours and your team's success will hinge upon how skillfully your leads can navigate through scheduling, earned value reporting, and progress reporting. If a task is underestimated or falls behind schedule, you will be expected to work as many additional hours as it takes to get it caught up. And coupled with the invisibility brought on from working remotely, you will be blamed for any failure to meet schedule. There are strict limits on how much vacation can be carried over. If you work there long enough to accumulate, say, over 5 weeks of vacation, any days beyond that will be subject to a "use it or lose it" policy. For the most part, people are friendly and easy to work with, however there exists a culture of bullying within the system architecture specialists. It was there 20 years ago and it sadly still exists.

Good company, pay can be better

      Pros

GDIT is a good company, lots of learning opportunities. Lots of technologies, overall an awesome place to learn and grow.

      Cons

They have a program called early clearance talent pipeline. The idea is great, get kids out of college, clear them early and have them support a customer who requires it, however the pay for those individuals is really low. Even after they get the clearance, I guess the whole thing behind it is that after the employee trains up within a couple of years the employee is expected to leave so they have a pipeline of new cleared talent. Some employees want to stay and grow in GDIT but can’t because other companies just pay much more.

Values Employees' Growth and Strength in Diversity

      Pros

Upper management has a solid commitment to employee groups for marginalized groups and veterans, often coming to Zoom meetings, and sponsoring communities for sharing information about technologies. Industry-standard pay & benefits. Pretty good policy documentation. Information slides on policy/tool/benefit changes, etc. sent regularly to all managers for their teams. Quarterly results communicated to employees.

      Cons

Some company tools are a bit behind the times, though that's been improving. Not much margin if any for continued employment if your contract ends, so they talk a lot about us being in control of our own careers. Most professional training allowance is contract-dependent. It seems that most management training is optional, and employees suffer the luck of the draw if their manager hasn't had good mentors/role models. My experience from other companies is this is also pretty standard.

      Great Opportunities, Terrible Health Benefits

Mar 15, 2021 - Data Scientist in Washington, DC

      Pros

I have one of the best teams one could possibly hope for. Everyone is incredibly supportive, and treats the position as an opportunity for growth for everyone. It's a breath of fresh air compared to other environments I've worked with. Both my company team and the team I work with for the client are amazing. I feel very lucky to have landed here.

      Cons

For a company with $39+ billion in revenue in 2019, it is unbelievable and unethical that they offer such terrible, catastrophic only health insurance to their employees. My deductible is $2,500 and max out-of-pocket is $5,000. The last company I worked for was a small non-profit with an operating budget of _$45 million_, significantly less than General Dynamic's (GDIT's parent company) revenue. Yet they provided comprehensive heath care with only a $250 annual deductible and max out of pocket of $1,500. Given how much money GDIT makes, I would think that they would be able to provide health care at least on par with a tiny non-profit. GDIT: do better for your employees, especially in the middle of a pandemic.

      Honest review

      Pros

-Great group of people. -They treat you like a real human being. -Great work/ life balance. -Everyone is very mellow. Easy to talk to. -They make you feel part of the family, on day one. -Birthdays, holidays, and product delivery group celebrations

      Cons

-They are a bit laid back. Sometimes a little too much. Not saying that's a bad thing, but if you come from a more strict regime, you might feel a bit odd at the beginning. It'll grow on you. -They have a serious documentation problem where it's a little hard to pick up on existing projects because there's no documented guidance. They have been improving on this, but it's still a long way to go. -Upper management that's where it's a little different. I haven't had much experience with them, but the times that I had I felt I was amongst a bunch of corporate elitists.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS....COLD, CLINICAL, HARSH

Apr 15, 2021 - Manager in Falls Church, VA
      Recommend

      Business Outlook

      Pros

not easy to drum up anything - its a solid corporate environment with all the drawbacks that come with that

      Cons

one of the coldest, most clinical, unpersonal, austere working places I have ever been a part of. management is distant and uncaring. it constantly shuns the ambitions and efforts of women and people of color who strive for advancement. unsurprisingly, the HR department doesn't look out for the worker bees and resists any noble intention to help newbies integrate into the workforce while showing favoritism and enabling hostile work environments to fester. no one knows how to communicate internally on anything. of course this miserable state of affairs trickles down from the senior management team - and the very top of the co. I would also say you're a mere cog here in a big wheel and not a person. if youre looking for a place to advance your career thru hard work, get respected and treated fairly, and enjoy the people you work with and have a decent work habitat, GDIT is absolutely NOT the place for you.
