I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Rank and file engineers are great to work with.

    Cons

Many mid and upper managers are unqualified. You often find they are empty suits that can only talk a game and are offended when you ask for an explanation. Often willing to put profit over ethics, and it is not working. Look at the stock price.

    Advice to Management

The new GDMS management is on the right track cleaning out some upper level hollow managers, but they need to go a level lower.

    Pros

Worked with some of the best engineers and people. Front Line managers were good.

    Cons

Mid and upper level management overburdened programs with unnecessary reviews making program overhead high.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Working at GD is not quite as bad as cleaning toilets in a truck stop beside an all-you-can-eat Sushi stand at a Flint Michigan gas station.

    Cons

dont know what their doing what few benefits they offer are dwindling more and more. some mgrs engage in blatant discrimination and mgt don't seem to care some employees can be totally rude and jerks and management doesn't care.

    Advice to Management

Your hopeless retire early and at least save the company stock.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time

    Pros

I love working at GDMS as there are many opportunities to move both upwards and laterally. They are constantly looking for ways to get the employees more engaged and ensure that they are making positive movement from employee feedback. They also take care to ensure that they are not left behind from changes in technology and business and are always looking to adapt and be agile. I love that we help our war fighters maintain...

    Cons

Sometimes it seems that the only way to really increase compensation is to switch positions. While pay increase is somewhat steady, it doesn't seem like much sometimes when inflation takes its toll. There are pockets of bad managers who demoralize their employees, however, the majority are good (which is rare in companies this size)

    Advice to Management

Continue to find the mangers that are not doing a good job, and weed them out.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

No problem meeting payroll, generally flexible work policies, decent (but shrinking) benefits. Layoffs are rare, and they almost never get rid of anyone, so 98% of the employees have job security. The company is run with decentralized execution, so small teams figure out how to solve their own problems with plenty of freedom of action.

    Cons

It's run like the military (by mostly former military managers), so you get promoted based on time in grade, not on performance. There is really no connection between compensation and performance. Their goal is to pay "95% of the local mean wage," which is to say that the average worker there is paid below the market average. It is well-known that they will hire someone at a higher wage than they are paying the current...

    Advice to Management

It is great that you are taking surveys and that you seem to desire to make changes, but your response to surveys is generally only a surface response that doesn't respond to the root findings of the surveys. Also, would be good to actually eliminate some poor-performing management in the next re-org. Stop trying to "create culture" by writing papers and taking surveys - instead change some policies and spend a few...
