I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Making good on their commitments to improve the working conditions and address shortfalls of the legacy businesses.

Emphasizing the right things - quality leaders/managers/supervisors, investments in technology, entrance into new markets such as public safety, electronic warfare, and space control and resilience, and rooting out unhelpful bureaucracy.

Surveying the workforce regularly and acting on the results.

    Cons

There is still a ways to go in the turnaround, but transformation takes time and perseverance. Do not tolerate the change averse antibodies.

    Advice to Management

    Keep going! You're making headway.

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Engaged Program managers and upper level management. Still run like an independent company. Employee focused.

    Cons

Need better communication throughout the organization.

    Advice to Management

Share challenges and successes across the company with more team meetings. Not just when someone retires!

    Pros

Excellent training and opportunities for diverse employment.

    Cons

Very poor upper management support for employees. Profit driven company in a race for the bottom of employee benefits and support.

    Advice to Management

    Trust and reward your people

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I worked for an excellent manager with a terrific support staff. Common Processes were helpful. Living in the Berkshires of Massachusetts was beautiful and not very stressful.

    Cons

Selection of personnel for senior management opportunities was sometimes bias based on personal relationships. Pay was somewhat stagnant even when performance results were high.

    Advice to Management

    Go back to 360 reviews.
Have more "one-over" management reviews of job selections and performance reviews.
Allow more managers into the incentive pool.
Provide pay increases based on contract performance.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people to work with at the lower levels.
Great company to work for over the years.
Good Engineering staff (as long as they are allowed to do their jobs)

    Cons

Too much emphasis on near term financial goals versus customer satisfaction.
No long term Program wins due to forcing GD products on customers.
Upper managers put in place with little skills. Promotions based on personality or how well liked vs Job performance.
No Job opportunities unless you are a relative of upper manager, are well liked (but no skills) or want to move to other site.
Upper management still getting bonuses at the sacrifice of lower level employee benefits and salaries. Oh, by the way, thanks for the Steak tips Friday. It sure made up for the lack of a raise this year.

    Advice to Management

I understand financial goals are important, but too much emphasis is placed on the goals vs keeping your customers happy.
Prime example is WINT INC2 and 3 programs will not carry C4S more than a couple of years. Start asking your customer what they want vs telling them what they need.
Have your Management staff go through objective analysis of skillsets not only based on supervisor input, but on input from all levels who interact with your managers.
Have your customer rate the Management staff as done in years past and really analyze those results and make changes.

    Pros

Great leadership. Prasies to Chris Marzilli for moving women into leadership positions. Changes in management are creating a new environment as we change with our customer.
Great addition with Phebe at the top!

    Cons

It has been a tough few years with the budget cuts and having to nagivate the morale issues

    Advice to Management

Have some fun while we are working hard at our job.

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good compensation and benefits, although the benefits have been reduced somewhat significantly in the past 3 years. Most employees are competent and dedicated.

    Cons

The company has gone too far in workforce reduction, to the point that their ability to execute on existing contracts is jeopardized. A few absolutely critical people have been "released" by managers who were put into their positions recently and really didn't know their people or who the strongest performers were; hence they laid off resources critical to on-going work. The "survivors" are now truly over-worked. Acquisitions over the past several years have almost all turned out to have been major mistakes. But, there has been almost no accountability for these mistakes.

    Advice to Management

Right-size the senior management. While the company has reduced its workforce dramatically over the past 3 years, the VPs have only played musical chairs; there has been no corresponding reduction in the number of VPs. Some VPs are now in charge of functional areas in which they have no experience or expertise.

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay was very good. Probably due to my long tenure there, but from day 1 the company paid very well, first as Motorola then as GDC4S.

    Cons

Management not very creative. Not very good at marketing and business development. Was overloaded with work most of the time. The culture was good until GD purchased the plant in 2001. Then things slowly changed and deteriorated..

    Advice to Management

Do something to stop the lay offs.
