I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people working here are top notch and are vested in the work that we do for our country.

The company is working extremely hard to change its brand and identity within the organization. It has rolled out numerous "people excellence" programs to further promote a healthy workplace.

The benefits are solid and respectable. The work schedules are flexible.

Business outlook is looking up for the forseeable future.

    Cons

Communication from management is not great (although this seems to be improving as of late).

Managers are reluctant to let employees rotate into other jobs within the company as they don't want to "lose" good people.

    Advice to Management

Keep taking a vested interest in what your employees are telling you. Make the rounds to get to know your employees on a more personal level as it makes them feel valued and not forgotten.

Some sort of profit sharing or bonus structure would go a long way to make the employees feel like we are part of a team and working towards something together.

Managers need to allow their employees greater flexibility in trying new things and looking for new opportunities for growth within the company. If an employee wants to try something new, help them get there! If you don't, they are going to look outside the company to fulfill those desires.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Visionary, technical Company that provides defense for our nation and the world. Cutting edge technology in C4ISR, Space and Ground Systems Technology. Great Leadership, Great Knowledgeable Employees, Excellent Culture

    Cons

If you are a slacker, don't come here - you will be discovered quickly. These are talented, dedicated, very intelligent employees and management that don't tolerate under performers. If you contribute you will be rewarded.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work on culture development, leadership training and development and innovation! Sharon Dunbar, the HR of VP, is doing a great job leading a cultural revolution. Keep up the values and traditions that has made General Dynamics a trusted company for so many years.

    Pros

Wide variety of opportunities to do interesting work supporting our nation's defense

    Cons

Large company - still improving at keeping many different sites and businesses connected. Much progress in this area though in last couple years

    Advice to Management

do everything possible to keep increasing communication down to all levels - this has improved but can still improve further

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Diverse set of products and services.
Focus on DOD and IC products, company moving away from services/support work.
5/4 work schedule available enabling every other Friday off.

    Cons

Not integrated across all business units. Still often stovepiped organizations based on acquisitions in legacy AIS and C4S forms

    Advice to Management

More transparency to employees as to business needs and issues. No need to hide bad news from employees, such as contract losses.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Management team is very focused on results from company wide employee surveys that take place every two years, to target areas for improvements that come directly from employee feedback. These improvements are tracked closely to ensure there are tangible results. This is very impressive compared t other company's where I have worked. This is not lip service, very impressive.

    Cons

Fast pace of work, but excellent opportunity to make contributions if you demonstrate you're capable.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work on turning those survey results into actions. This is not lip service and it's greatly appreciated by employees.

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great people and interesting projects.

Easy to take ownership of something and excel at it.

Great work/life balance - at the end of the day you're done and there is no after-hours expectation. 40 hr/week is really that.

    Cons

Low raises each year and poor recognition of achievement. Each year, most people get about 2 - 3% raise, never anything higher, but sometimes lower. One year (during military funding sequester), there was a company-wide mandate that the current year would see 0 raises for all employees.

I saw several top-notch, extremely bright employees leave because there is little financial incentive for exceptional work.

Salaries are about what you'd expect for defense contracted company empoyees, which means they are quite a bit lower than other commercial companies.

    Advice to Management

Give better-than-average raises to employees that are

    Pros

9/80 scheduling allows every other Friday off
    Interesting work

    Cons

    Management is clueless.
Systems and top level reward incompetence. Too much process.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring inexperienced and incompetent people. Do not promote based on hiring women in key positions for diversity. Need leadership and technical vision. Remove ineffective people. Working from home is overused and abused.
