I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked at GDMS for a very short time (<1yr), but really loved how employees got treated there. Management really tried hard to keep employees happy. GDMS is located in Scottsdale, which is in the nicer part of Phoenix. 9/80 work schedule which allows you to take every other Friday off. The "decompression room" has nice big screen TV, with X-box and Playstation along with pingpong table and foosball table. 401k matching up to 4.5%. Nice small perks like paying $150 toward your gym membership and free Valley Metro card allowing you to take buses and light rails at no cost.

    Cons

The company can't seem to win any work contracts. Maybe marketing department needs to step up their level. Due to this, your job might not be very stable. Engineering tools (SW/HW) and workstations are a bit dated, not keeping up with the outside world.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work, and keep on improving.

    "Employee Engagement?"

    Pros

The best reason to work at GD is the flexibility on the time schedule.

    Cons

As a supposed leader in the industry the pay scale doesn't reflect that. The company is growing into a 'Government' corporation but still holds many of the small minded individuals that stagnate the overall potential. Individuals put in the leadership rolls hold double standards and the true mindset of the buddy system. Not all employees are held to the same standards and the work flow is unevenly distributed.

    Advice to Management

Hold everyone to the same standard and expectation, across the board, regardless of tenure, department or education. The best workers are those who do the job, don't complain and know how to get things done.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

My direct management is awesome! Open communication among my direct management and peers. I have opportunities to voice my opinions and concerns. There is respect and trust.

    Cons

Upper management, at times, can be or give the appearance of draconian dictation. This is getting better and the reigns are starting to be relaxed, but decision making at the lower level is still heavily scrutinized.

    Advice to Management

Relax the reigns a little and trust that your employees will make the right decision. If you aren't making mistakes, you aren't trying.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Many dedicated, skilled employees at lower levels. Overall benefits package is above average

    Cons

Short-sighted (tactical) vision. Adverse to investing in technology without immediate return. Any downturns in Defense met swiftly with layoffs. Insufficient flexibility in moving employees through cross-function assignments to build up management.

    Advice to Management

You can't buy your way to success. The customer is ALWAYS right - but that doesn't mean you shouldn't help them see what right really is.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

No problem meeting payroll, generally flexible work policies, decent (but shrinking) benefits. Layoffs are rare, and they almost never get rid of anyone, so 98% of the employees have job security. The company is run with decentralized execution, so small teams figure out how to solve their own problems with plenty of freedom of action.

    Cons

It's run like the military (by mostly former military managers), so you get promoted based on time in grade, not on performance. There is really no connection between compensation and performance. Their goal is to pay "95% of the local mean wage," which is to say that the average worker there is paid below the market average. It is well-known that they will hire someone at a higher wage than they are paying the current workers in the same position. Otherwise they will never be able to hire anyone (duh!) Hence, there is more turnover than necessary, but people often return at a higher wage. It is an odd system, but it seems to work. Oh, and there have been 3 or 4 re-orgs in the last 6 years, but no one at the top ever actually loses their job. De-centralized execution often leads to no one knowing how to get things done outside their immediate area and there are almost no "tools" for PM's or Finance people to use - everyone has to invent their own way to do a generic task that everyone is doing on a regular cadence.

    Advice to Management

It is great that you are taking surveys and that you seem to desire to make changes, but your response to surveys is generally only a surface response that doesn't respond to the root findings of the surveys. Also, would be good to actually eliminate some poor-performing management in the next re-org. Stop trying to "create culture" by writing papers and taking surveys - instead change some policies and spend a few dollars to develop some tools.
