I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great place to ride the bus to retirement.

    Cons

Treat salary employees like hourly right up to the point where hourly employees get paid overtime. Terrible culture. Treat employees poorly. Constantly taking benefits away from employees. Little to no growth potential.

    Advice to Management

Retire! All the old management needs to retire and get some fresh heads in there that can look past "the way it's always been". Right now I'd say there isn't a more dead-end engineering company in Phoenix. Chris Marzilli is the worst CEO I've ever had the displeasure of working for. He spreads the culture of devaluing the employees. He's been poison to C4S.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good pay. Reasonable work life balance.

    Cons

Little accountability for performance. A lot of the buddy system and hoarding of work going on.

    Advice to Management

Get aggressive on new business. Remove inefficiencies in the large sites. Diversify work across sites more.

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good, technically competent people. Projects are really challenging, interesting and fun. Interesting people to work with.

    Cons

Management has no idea what they are doing. They have not diversified and appear to not be interested in diversifying. They have no loyalty to employees who've worked for the company for years. There are few interesting projects left. They are loosing their best employees.

    Advice to Management

Get a plan. You will not stay in business at your current rate of decline.

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Lot's of boundaries - Very formal processes, if you like to go with the flow then it's a great place to work (this could also be a con - you decide).

    Cons

You don't get compensated for the personal risks you bear by having information related to a security clearance.

    Advice to Management

Look seriously at agile development. You might think you know what it is, but a cursory look wont get you there. Jumping in fully as a company is required to fully see the benefits.

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I learned a lot about my specific software engineering domain.

    Cons

I was forced to work 6-day weeks but get paid for only 5. You must submit your time card precise to 30-min increments at the end of every day. Interesting project work is centered in Massachusetts and Arizona - employees at other sites are treated as internal contract labor. Goal is to bill the customer (typically the federal government) for as many hours as possible and maximize the conversion of awarded... contracts into payments. This is contrary to engineers' goals of operating efficiently and innovatively.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Slowly changing from Waterfall to Agile 3 weeks PTO for new hires. Can accrue to twice as much PTO and it carries over year to year

    Cons

Pay freeze, limited promotions Limited to no investment in future technologies in favor of meeting short-term numbers. Senior management is slow to remove poor team leads Process for the sake of process Poor long term vision Reactionary leadership, not anticipatory leadership.

    Advice to Management

Invest in new technologies and embrace Agile development. Remove dogmatic team leads and promote only qualified leaders into ALL leadership roles. Marzilli needs to go.

  8. "A lot of good people work there...or did"

    StarStarStarStarStar
Former Employee - Staff Software Engineer in Scottsdale, AZ

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

General Dynamics is a huge company and as such provides a lot of career opportunities and the ability to change careers while remaining employed.

    Cons

Overly concerned about charging time to overhead. Wanting to cut overhead costs is understandable, but simply shifting those costs to other areas is not. It is more efficient for work to be benificial to multiple projects rather than be reinvented for each one individually. But this by definition is overhead.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems

    Pros

Talented people, High achievers, Good peers from remote offices,Flexible hours, Comfortable workplace, Good remuneration, Excellent opportunities for training, Amazing product.

    Cons

Quickly losing quality on new hires, Silly internal competition, Poor local management (since 2009), Low morale at local office, Product concept is still amazing, but its technology is almost outdated.

    Advice to Management

The Pittsburgh Office management needs renovation/intervention ASAP. A better strategy for talent retention needs to be established now, as senior staff that represents the technical core of the company is thinking about leaving (after 10+ years in the job). Let's keep this office a great place to work.

Smart people, fair managers, great benefits and pay.

    Cons

Overdone annual appraisal process, IT is a little over-pedantic about blocking sites.
