I worked at General Dynamics (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Gulfstream Aerospace is owned by General Dynamics. Big companies are not fun. Gulfstream has gone downhill since GD BOUGHT it. Not a good place anymore unless you are in Senior Management where anything goes and the pay is awesome.

    Cons

Senior management is pathetic. One VP dated an administrative assistant. I think she is doing well now as are the others who have golfed or slept their way up. Way to Go!

    Advice to Management

No advice to management other than, keep your resume updated. You don't deserve your jobs. Someday someone will get it. And Phoebe is alienating....not good.

I worked at General Dynamics full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Working directly on programs that serve the USA's defense sector. Having great co-workers.

    Cons

The contract game. Of the ~10 years I worked here, almost seven were off and on as a contractor. Management treats this (contracting) as a way to reap all the benefits of a skilled labor force with none of the responsibility apart from flat compensation. If you contract here, there will be talk of possibly hiring at the end of you 12 or 18 month contract-it will never happen.

Company uses the sequestration excuses to terminate contractors, then brings them back 90 days later.

    No upward promotion opportunities.

    Advice to Management

It is very simple: accomplish the task, reward the people who perform. You are barely doing the former and none of the latter.

Gut your bloated middle management force. Nobody should have two or three bosses. "Office Space" is fiction, not the work week one should expect from the 6th(?) largest DoD contractor.

I worked at General Dynamics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

9/80 Work Week. Ok Benefits although reduced more and more each year. No micro managing and decent facilities which were consistently being upgraded

    Cons

Lots of Favoritism.Culture of work place bullying and hostility. Lots of layoffs and done in small batches rather than large numbers so not to have to report to public as they are publicly traded. insulting pay raises 1-3 percent yearly and in some cases none. No accountability and management just wants to hear everything is OK even when it is not. Insulting incentives and rewards like a cheap Chetah pin when someone saves the company tens of thousands of dollars. High turnover.

    Advice to Management

Reward your employees well when you win large contracts and the company is doing well. Issue pay raises that keep up with cost of living.

I worked at General Dynamics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

At the time - a pension, no more pensions. Flex time - when they let you use it. Decent pay.

    Cons

I had 40 years service when I was laid off while they were hiring younger employees. Management thinks experience is over rated and if you have a "procedure" a monkey can do any job. Nepotism is rampant. Quality and Ethics are just posters on the wall.

    Advice to Management

Management thinks experience is over rated and if you have a "procedure" a monkey can do any job. Well that may work with "Senior Staff", but laying off experienced "teachers" to hire young inexperienced workers and not properly training them is going to kill this company.

I have been working at General Dynamics (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good starting pay and benefits

    Cons

This is a company of WAY too many egos in one building. Tell you that you are not allowed to go to the bathroom, and the leadership and trainers set you up for failure and promote self doubt rather than build confidence.

    Advice to Management

Please monitor the supervisors more closely and the trainers as well. This site will close if their is not a major restructuring of the way employees are treated. They are set up for failure and their confidence is crushed and the site will suffer due to this. Without each person, the numbers are not there, if the numbers are not there, then the leadership looks like a failure and the site will be shut down and a new location will be opened with the hopes of better success. So many fresh, new employees start their first training day with the glow of acheivement and the optimism of learning quickly in order to move up to a leadership role one day. They lose that glow and optimism by day three after being told too many times that they are just a number, and "I couldn't care less how you do when you take the test and hit the floor. If you fail, I'll be giving you the parade wave as you are escorted out of the building, Bye,:" Then there are no two supervisors with the same answer for any question that is asked of them. The whole site needs a major restructuring of the leadership pyramid and new processes need to be utilized to ensure that the employees are treated with respect so that they enjoy their jobs. This will make them strive harder for success. Their confidence and optimism should be encouraged and maintained. A confident and optimistic worker is a hard and dedicated worker. This will make their numbers look good, thus the sites numbers look good.

I have been working at General Dynamics full-time

    Pros

Flex time - work 40 hours a week and leave whenever you hit that
401k - company matches a total of 5% of your salary if you toss in 6%
    Work/Life balance is great
But wait until they make changes to these benefits

    Cons

    Parking is bad
Tuition Reimbursement is bad - 0-3 years will only get half reimbursement
    Work is boring
    Not much career opportunities
Pay is inferior compared to other big corporations

You might as well leave while you have the chance put in my 2 weeks just in the nick of time
