I worked at General Dynamics as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

The Electric Boat division is a hard working, mature organization accustomed to meeting Dept of Defense commitments.

    Cons

The project management office I contracted in has not upgraded its software tools supporting its PMO and therefore Project Managers time is wasted jumping through various additional hoops to work around antiquated tools.

    Advice to Management

Invest in the upgrades needed to stay current and the PMs effectiveness and productivity will more than offset the costs.

I have been working at General Dynamics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

No micromanagement, get to meet nice and knowledgeable people, excellent networking capabilities. I learn more from conversing with my coworkers than from my project.

    Cons

Low tech, bureaucratic, no sense of job importance. For a recent college grad, this is far below my standards for a "high tech" company.

    Advice to Management

If everything does get better with a clearance, have hr go through the effort of instilling hope in bored new hires.

I worked at General Dynamics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The area and location I worked in had really good immediate and mid-level bosses, so flexibility was there and being rewarded for hard work was there.

    Cons

Any "corporate" management had no understanding of how our location worked or made money and they made it hard to do a good job for the customer. Local management were very quick to farm out interesting projects to contractors. Corporate was highly afraid to leverage existing talent and some existing software. Not enough time off and vacation time has to be used as sick time.

    Advice to Management

Stop being afraid of risk. Allow the people who know how to do their jobs to do them. Stop being bogged down in process, process doesn't make money. Allow salaried employees flexibility with regards to sick time and when hours are worked, even allowing work from home.

I worked at General Dynamics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Composites work, some excellent managers.

    Cons

H.R. and H.R. aligned management too powerful. Micromanagement to an invasive level. Pay low, for aerospace. No competency testing, for management or engineering.

    Advice to Management

As long as there is a divided management team, with some managers taking an Us vs. Them approach with the line employees, you will continue to enjoy an annual turnover rate of 30% or more. The laziest and least productive employees make the same Low for Sector wages as the most accomplished hard chargers. Go to merit based increases, and for the love of Pete, spend some money on improving facilities and infrastructure! When an employee exceeds a percentage rejection rate: Get rid of them. Stop hiring to satisfy quotas that aren't even being pushed by the government, any more.

I worked at General Dynamics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Common snack area, flexible area, neat technology

    Cons

Not sure why, but many co-workers in the bloomington location lack any personality and are used to running their own technological kingdom vs sharing technologies

    Advice to Management

Hire more people that know how to talk face to face vs. exclusively through instant messaging or email

I worked at General Dynamics as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Can work on defense products for governement.

    Cons

You can't get a job here as a contractor because they sold out to "Minority Business Enterprise" and "Women's Business Enterprise" as their primary staffing company. I always tell india MBE and WBE togo aways when they call me about jobs at GD because I know they will shaft me. WBE=MBE in my opinion, always an india MBE company hidden as their primary telling the WBE what they can and can't do...

    Advice to Management

dump MBE/WBE as primary staffing company. they suck. the best people refuse to work for them.

    Pros

Decent benefits. Annual raises have been about 2%.

    Cons

Very limited opportunities for promotion or lateral transfers to other positions. Not willing to make the necessary changes to make the company competitive in a changing environment.

    Advice to Management

Layoffs are handled badly and difficult to move up the ladder
