I worked at General Mills as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Supportive staff, competent management, engaging projects, value-added experience, multinational company, robust supply chain, modern data analytics systems. Overall this company has all the areas needed for a great internship experience.

    Cons

Many long-time employees make it difficult to produce innovative ideas and get an unbiased view of corporate culture. May be difficult to move up quickly through the ranks.

    Advice to Management

More experienced hires will provide new points of view.

I have been working at General Mills full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    People-focused culture
    History of re-creating itself
Minneapolis-St Paul metro is great place to live and raise a family
New CEO is willing to make tough choices

    Cons

Still learning that compromise and 'appeasing everyone' can mean losing in the long run
New HR changes are more competitive but company is in transition.

    Advice to Management

Be one thing and be it well. The company can't do what it's always done.

I worked at General Mills full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I loved my experience at General Mills even though it was during a tough business climate. Smart people and highly flexible culture, but it has also seen a ton of transition and changes since I left in 2014.

    Cons

Highly matrixed and sometimes slow to get things done, but you an still be effective if you are good at building relationships.

    Advice to Management

Tap into and meet the changing needs of what consumers want in food.

I worked at General Mills full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work/life balance was GREAT! Was able to work from home in my position at least one a day week which saved me a 30 mile commute to the office. My excellent work ethic allowed me to work from home more frequently. Greatful!

    Cons

    Company has been downsizing frequently.

    Advice to Management

    None at this time

I have been working at General Mills full-time

    Pros

    - Great experience. The chance to work for billion dollar brands and with iconic names like Cheerios, Nature Valley, Lucky Charms, Betty Crocker and Pillsbury is rewarding and fun. Consumer Insights at General Mills is largely considered one of the best places to get marketing research experience.

    - Two year rotations. Don't like your current job? Don't worry. Every two years you get to work with a new brand, a new team and do very different work ranging from internal marketing best practices, to innovation with c-stores, to advertising for a national brand. This keeps the work interesting and also provides incredible career development opportunities.

    - Strong work/life balance. If you are a strong performer and can manage expectations, you can usually work 40-45 hours a week. Managers actually care about your work/life balance and are willing to adjust workload accordingly.

    - Great people. From coworkers, to middle managers to senior leaders, I feel that the people that work at General Mills are both intelligent, hard-working and someone you'd actually be happy to hang out with. I've had over 7 managers in my career, and the managers I have met at General Mills have been the best I've experienced.

    - Competitive pay and benefits. Strong salaries mean that it can be hard to leave General Mills--few companies in the Twin Cities compensate as well.

    Cons

    - Challenging times. Currently the CPG industry is facing serious challenges as consumers are seeking fresh foods, unprocessed ingredients and are reducing sugar intake. Leadership is strong, but is pressured to make less-than-optimal choices to improve trends in the short-term. The company culture is not the same as it was in the past, but it is still the best company culture I have ever experienced (and haven't heard of many companies that come close).

    Pros

Work life balance, low daily stress, collaborative environment, high amount of responsibility

    Cons

Company is not growing, lack of "passion", Lack of diversity/heavy Minnesota culture, unclear business processes.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at General Mills full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people in every part of the company and good ethics in the company's DNA. Good work life balance and benefits programs but they've been reduced as part of recent cost cutting measures.

    Cons

Poor business leadership that aren't driving results and accountability. Reduced benefits due to recent cost cutting actions result in new hires not having access to historically competitive benefits.

I have been working at General Mills full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are great to work with, you get a high level of support from your network, development programs, stretch assignments to grow your capabilities

    Cons

Lack of decision making ability, movement is very slow, industry is not doing well, challenging to bring new ways of thinking to the table, pretty hierarchical reporting structure, lack of autonomy on your business

    Advice to Management

Learn to differentiate what worked well because of industry performance vs what worked well because of the nature of the idea. We are not in our heyday anymore, so reminiscing and continuing to expect the same ideas to work/be considered is unrealistic to a point.
