I worked at General Mills as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

General Mills has some really interesting brands in diverse categories in the UK. Very few businesses can say that they genuinely value their people and this is one of them. The HR culture of care is omni-present and they really do live their corporate beliefs and values.

    Cons

The culture comes at the expense of commercial thinking, so decisions are put off for too long whilst the impact on staff is considered. Your effectiveness runs on the quality of the relationships that you build, so interestingly the answer you get depends on the quality of the relationship you build. people will say yes if they like you, not because it's the right thing to do. You could say that applies in most walks of life, but it's really prominent in Harman House!

    Advice to Management

One of the mantras in General Mills HR is "trust people to do the right thing". They only will if you allow talented people to use their skills and experience as they see fit.

Empowerment as a value drifts into indecision.
Too many stakeholders and over collaboration makes decision making slow.

I have been working at General Mills full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great products
Generally focuses on development of people: some people have very rapid career progression
    Truly Values Lead business
    Strong Senior Management

    Cons

Culture can be a bit soft but it is changing
Getting increasingly "Global" meaning it's losing touch in local market and you spend more and more of your time "stakeholding" people as opposed to doing useful work. Although not as bad as most big companies
Can be a bit slow moving people through the business due to high staff retention

    Pros

    1) Great Brands
    2) Supportive teams
    3) Very good work/life balance
From a culture point of view, GM is incredible positive - I am yet to work in a company that is so focused on the wellbeing of its staff.

    Cons

    1) In a bid to keep everyone happy and avoid conflict decision making can be slow
    2) Some members of staff become 'comfortable' and don't add as much value as they could
    3) In a bid to keep everyone ha

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Outstanding commitment to placing consumers at the heart of brand management.
Firm understanding of how research should be used, respect for tools, methodologies and personal judgement.
Marketers are encouraged to develop and use intuition.
Corporate culture really encourages people to be themselves, acknowledges the value of big personalities and individual expression, welcomes humour and believes that making time for fun is useful and necessary.
Entrepreneurial spirit is highly conducive to development for people who are willing to chart their own course.
Opportunity to work with amazing Centre for Learning & Excellence, widely acknowledged as a consumer research function par excellence in the industry.

    Cons

Feedback can be a bit weak and nebulous because a heavy culture of "relationship preservation above all else" can inhibit authentic discourse.
The European organisation does not often permit "two way" responsibilities between the UK CI function and the EU CI function, the relationship is out of balance.
Very limited opportunities for advancement within the UK, transfer opportunities are very difficult to come by, probably a source of attrition.

    Advice to Management

Wonderful company that anyone would be very proud to represent as an employee. I do think there is an opportunity to become a bit more "buttoned down" and to ensure that value is placed on sound decision-making, recognising that at times this will come at the expense of "relationships," but that this is nessary to avoiding decision by committee. Still though, a great place with great people - to anyone reading this, if you have an opportunity to join GMUK make sure you do everything you can to secure an offer as it is a tremendous experience.
