    Pros

The culture at Gen Re is second to none. You will be working with a great group of people.

    Cons

Upward momentum is slow. Promotions seem to be based more on attrition rather than merit.

    Pros

Very good compensation and benefits with a very strong 401k program.

    Cons

Some middle managers are not very good people managers and/or are technically qualified for their position. How they rise within the company maybe be more by their political connections than competence..

    Advice to Management

Be careful of promotions of managers that have no people skills. These manages manage up, i.e. they manage their own managers and really do know or care about their subordinates.

I have been working at General Re full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very good parent company that is stable and will likely be around for many lifetimes. Intellectually challenging environment that offers you some upward movement possibilities.

    Cons

A bit stodgy and slow moving at times. Top heavy (with baby boomers) with lots of folks who have trouble handing over the reigns.

    Pros

There is an open environment where everyone, regardless of title, has the same workspace. This puts everyone on a level playing field and encourages collaboration.

    Cons

There could be more input into the decision making process for junior staff on issues that effect everyone; often people find out more through the grapevine than through senior management.

    Advice to Management

Diversify into other product areas that will enable the firm to ride out the storm when catastrophic events occur simultaneously.
