    Advice to Management

Look at the employees that go above and beyond. Listen to your employees suggestions. Stop picking and choosing who you write up and stop giving excuses and trying to sugarcoat your bad decisions.

I have been working at Genesee & Wyoming full-time

    Pros

Fair pay and benefits, safety focused

    Cons

No structure, hostile environment, management lacks interest, wants more work over life balance by asking for after hour work to be done, you can't be a nice person to advance in the company, rather hire outsiders than from promote from within, those that are promoted shouldn't be since they lack knowledge and people skills, micromanages employees to the point they can't do the job, lacks enough employees to cover the amount of work to do

    Advice to Management

Give employees the tools to do the job and let them do it without interference or hovering. Understand that 24 hour railroads doesn't mean the employees should individually work 24 hours. Hire the best candidates for positions, not the best resumes. Hire more employees instead of running your current ones into the ground.

I have been working at Genesee & Wyoming full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Benefits, Safety Awards,

    Cons

Employees are not treated the same, management plays favorites, micromanagement is a huge problem, everyone lies to get what they want. It almost has a high school feel to it- Grow up- we are all adults. The pay does not justify the stress, time, and pressure.

    Advice to Management

There should be equal pay for equal work, employees should feel appreciated, a boss is only as good as their employees under them! Stop bringing in outsiders and promote within, if you don't feel your current employees aren't good enough then there is a problem

I worked at Genesee & Wyoming full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    guaranteed 40 hour work week.

    Cons

This company does not care for their employees or how much time you have invested in the job. They will replace you with a new hire (warm body) just to save costs on benefits and rate of pay. Horrible management that changes hands every other year.

    Advice to Management

Get off your high horse and care for your employees instead of looking out for only yourself and your bosses.

I worked at Genesee & Wyoming full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits, vacation, and sick time. High focus on safety.

    Cons

Lack of structured training. Conflicting information given to work related questions. Conflict resolution handled inappropriately. Some people treat other department employees like "Us" against "Them". The company is not what its portrayed to be during the interview. They focus a lot on safety, which is great, but that same attention should be given to retention of employees. This company has a VERY HIGH attrition rate in all departments.

    Advice to Management

Management and Human Resources needs to look into implementing a structured training process. Upper Management should have training in human relations and conflict resolution. Non-supervisory employees' complaints should be taken into account. Don't always side with the managers. It would be more cost effective and beneficial to the company if you invest in retaining employees instead of having a revolving door, which puts stress and pressure on the employees who do stay. They are constantly having to pickup the slack when employees quit.
