I worked at Genesee & Wyoming full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Benefits are great, lower management is good.

    Cons

Pay is abysmal unless you work 70+ hours per week, does not value their employees well, don't count on HR for any real help. Safety is just a word in a book with coworkers unless someone screws something up. You are pressured to break rules "as long as no one sees it" to get work done. Coworkers that have been there for years are incredibly complacent. Coworkers are only concerned with "getting things done" rather than...

    Advice to Management

Speed up your hiring process, look deeper than what is on the surface, tell the customers and coworkers to stop pressuring employees to do things they can't.

I worked at Genesee & Wyoming full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

It was a job. I managed some very good team members who took pride in what they did.

    Cons

G&W lacks the ability to respond to changes in the business environment. Executives follow the lead of the Class 1 railroads (BNSF, UP, CSX, NS). Tons of revenue is lost to slow or ineffective decision-making. When decisions are finally made, they are "communicated" down...which really only means the AGM or GM parrots down an e-mail he got from a AVP or EVP, adding the comment "The expectation is (fill in the blank)"...without...

    Advice to Management

Nepotism and the good old boy network is rampant. Ask each AVP, VP, GM, AGM, Director, etc. to answer how they "add value" to the company. When they answer, you will quickly find the don't add much value if any. I think I saw my boss once every 1-2 months if I was lucky, outside of a staff meeting. Golfing was evidently more important than running a railroad.

    I worked at Genesee & Wyoming full-time

    Pros

Benefits, health insurance; pay is adequate if you don't think about the 70+ hour weeks.

    Cons

Northeast Region: No leadership, even though petty politics dominate. The key concepts of safety, asset utilization, team building, and integrity are not understood or are ignored.

I have been working at Genesee & Wyoming full-time

    Pros

    Guaranteed forty hours per week.

    Cons

Low pay for the type of work. Very high turnover rate.

    Advice to Management

When you find out an employee is seeking work elsewhere, don't treat them like a child. A good manager would want to know why they're losing all of their good employees.

I have been working at Genesee & Wyoming full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Railroad retirement, some managers are top notch very knowledgable and professional

    Cons

Nepitism upper managers promote the good ole boy system black ball and retaliation is absolute if you report anything on a liked or employed family member not interested in integrity training or safety the truth is preached but great lengths are taken to hide and cover up unprofessional behavior to save face highly recommend never to challenge anything the rules only apply to those without political engagement.....

    Advice to Management

Never compromise your integrity take care of your subordinates they are people too of equal importance take t you me to train them properly that will go a long way with their morale.

I have been working at Genesee & Wyoming full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Health insurance is decent. 401k matching is decent.

    Cons

Turnover of Senior VPs indicates lack of executive oversight. Extremely limited growth opportunities, no mentoring to promote from within.

    Advice to Management

Get your act together, morale issues at many levels indicate a problem whether the top recognizes it or not. Stop hiring Class I corporate levels who refuse to learn what makes (made) GWI great (once upon a time).
