I worked at Genesee & Wyoming full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Unnecessary rules aren't written every time someone trips.
Potential to travel the region, U.S, and global properties.
Rate of change is slower and more aware than larger railroads.
There is more care towards people and allowance for errors.
20 years behind the industry so you can bring ideas from other and make even better.
    Railroad Pride.
    Injury Rates.
    HFI calls.

    Cons

Sometimes people jump to conclusions and make bad choices.
    Click-ish.
Low level of accountability among senior leaders.
Low pay for amount of time spent working.
    Questionable Loyalty

    Advice to Management

True leaders listen, but make their own opinions. You don't have to like someone after work for you to recognize them at work. Some people work different than others. Just because they are different doesn't mean you need to panic and let your mind wander.

    Pros

Solid company with bright and talented people at the helm. Good benefits (though they are slowly getting worse).

    Cons

Good benefits and working conditions go a long way, but pay is "just OK".

    Advice to Management

The company is growing rapidly, which is great, but you can feel the traditional G&W culture slipping away, which is not great. Find a way to maintain the culture and feel that has given this company its great success. We're counting on you.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Genesee & Wyoming full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many responsibilities and opportunities to gain leadership qualities
    Competitive Pay & Benefits
Overall Positive Company Culture and Safety Culture

    Cons

Quality of Life is quickly deteriorating

    Advice to Management

Find a wayto retain front line managers by making job work load and expectations more realistic. Operations Managers are on call 24-7 but many do not have any time off and the amount of hours spend working does not justify the employee value proposition

I have been working at Genesee & Wyoming full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I'm home every night unlike most bigger railroads. It has more of a family feel when everything is working together well.

    Cons

Being it's a smaller railroad everyone knows your problems and sometimes people can get into little cliques. But for the most part it's pretty good.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

I have been working at Genesee & Wyoming full-time

    Pros

The people are the greatest asset at this company. Great benefits, especially Healthcare and dental. Great stock purchase program for employees.

    Cons

Still operates like a small company. Needs to be more open to big company ideas. Also needs to work on people development to open up more growth opportunities for current employees.

    Advice to Management

    Communication is key to success.
