  1. ""Has-been" agency, but there are some interesting things going on"

    Pros

Flexible work-from-home policy is great. We also had three flexible extra vacation days for the summer. Most people are pretty nice. Generally hands-off management which can be a good thing (not breathing down your necks, autonomy and trust building) but sometimes bad thing (lack of knowledge in situations and therefore lack of understanding/care). Junior staff (CSA, CE, associates, Senior associates) are generally pretty close and are happy to help one another. Fun happy hours, especially in the summer. Compared to other agencies the hours aren't always bad, unless you let yourself get taken advantage of. Burson also owns really great data tools which are fun to use.

    Cons

Stuck doing the same old things that may have worked for un-savvy clients ten years ago, but it isn't fooling anyone in this industry. Tough place to grow in terms of doing cutting edge work for clients. Also since BM is known as a crisis agency, it'll take work from some less "desirable" clients, but it can be interesting.

BM is owned by WPP (holding company) so there hasn't been a raise in months. The one that was supposed to happen mid-year still hasn't happened, but not much BM can do to control it (besides perform well, which has been tough). It's been a tough year for Burson with a lot of digital colleagues leaving, which is tough on teams because they know digital media practices best so it keeps BM in a vicious cycle of "has-been" kind of work. Some managers are really unrealistic and selfish with deadlines, dumping projects on people with no thought on what other client work one may have. A lot needs to change over time to turn things around, but there are some interesting things going on if you get in with the right people.

    Pros

If you happen to fit the bill of their inner circle, It can actually turn out to be a good place for you. There really are some brilliant minds at work there that can help accentuate your learning curve. They have good clients, great infrastructure and a decent reputation in the industry.

    Cons

This is entirely personal but also an opinion shared among considerable number of peers I know. Your growth here will depend on your peer's opinion of you, your verdict on the grapevine, how impressed your seniors with your attitude and has absolutely nothing to do with the actual work you are doing, how happy your clients are or how smart you are.

    I worked at Genesis Burson-Marsteller full-time

    Pros

    Infrastructure
    Coffee machines
    Birthday cakes
    ......................................................

    Cons

Biased top management which has resulted in a record breaking drop out any organization has ever witnessed (3 employees quit every month)
Work pressure and work load increases as you go down the hierarchy while the leadership is is no way involved and only walks in to take credit
No strategic planning on delegation which results in an employee handling a new account every single day and also multiple accounts at any given time without actually being in charge of the account but very much responsible for cleaning up after someone every now and then which results in poor performance, poor outcomes and blame games.
Poor time management with projects due to irresponsible middle level managers and also because of large number of exits
Unhappy clients resulted due to lack of training of the junior and the senior staff

    Advice to Management

Respect all your employees equally and they will take care of your clients for you

I worked at Genesis Burson-Marsteller (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Great brands to work for
    - A lot to learn
    - Good growth opportunity

    Cons

    - Too much work pressure
    - Forget about weekends
    - Too much politics
    - Pays at par with industry standards but nothing more for people who put in extra hours. Eg.- People who work in the entertainment team slog their butts but get paid as much as their peers who work in other teams and have relatively less work burden

    Advice to Management

Please do something to eradicate politics from the organisation to retain people at junior levels
