I have been working at Genesis Health System full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    *Great hands-on experience
    *Good over-time pay
*Fast-paced environment, day goes by really quick
    *Set schedule
    *Independence/no micro-managing
    *Awesome co-workers :)

    Cons

*Having to sometimes stay late or come in early due to not enough staff
*Not enough staff and not able to give patients enough individual attention

    Advice to Management

Allow for more staff on each shift to ensure a more therapeutic environment and stay for the patients. It is hard on weekends to give the same level of care with half the staff.

I worked at Genesis Health System full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Offers Health insurance, dental, and vision. I can offer no other positive feedback other than the man who owns the pharmacy at Illini Campus is a great guy and so is his staff. A great perk to have that nearby.

    Cons

Where to start? Management sweep issues under rug, HR not interested in getting rid of abusive employees, allow bullying with no consequences and believes in punishing the victims. The management protects their own instead of wanting to improve work environment and put out quality work for the patients. You would think a hospital would support breastfeeding mothers, ill employees using a nebulizer, or advise an employee of their FMLA rights when they have a child dying of cancer... instead they make you feel like your imposing on your coworkers when you pump or take a neb. I was forced to go to another floor of my building to take a treatment, doctors I worked with had to step in and insist I had somewhere to go pump (instead of a restroom), and I was threatened if I was late coming back from a break, after walking up and down stairs, I would need to use my paid time off. My coworker’s son died and that’s when they offered to give her extra time off... Just another case of an employer taking advantage of their employees ignorance of their rights. I saw long term employees get fired for letting a doctor know a sample wasn’t enough for testing but others being retained after being caught having relations at work. I am still seeing a psychiatrist for what happened there and have panic attacks if I go there

    Advice to Management

Clean house. You and your employees need a union to fix your workplace so people want to work for you again. Fair wages, fair rules, and agreements made to keep everyone honest!

I have been working at Genesis Health System full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

flexible hours, good collaboration between departments/offices, communication is improving throughout the system as gaps are identified and closed, heavy focus on process improvement. Good retirement and insurance benefits

    Cons

IT/reporting issues can be overwhelming. PTO is also sick days and holiday pay bank as well. PTO accrued at a super slow rate for having to cover sick and holiday pay, giving very little time left for any actual vacation days, and I've never even called into work sick.

    Advice to Management

Better orientation for staff, specific to their roles.

    Cons

    Workload can be overwhelming.
Staff parking is a bit far.

    Pros

Overall Genesis tries to operate by its mission. In most departments, not a bad place to work.

    Cons

If you use an actual sick day (not planned) it is counted agains you.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees

I worked at Genesis Health System part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Staff very nice from interview to orientation -then it all goes down hill once you hit the floor.
Dietary and ancillary staff did a good job!

    Cons

The worst place I have ever worked- from mandatory overtime to impossible patient loads this place was a nightmare!
Management with little to no experience that completely ignored any kind of issues brought before them and for those inappropriately punished for reporting serious patient and staff concerns.
The most unhappy nurses I have ever seen in 30 years as a caregiver.

    Advice to Management

Clean house and start over ! Companies like you are why there is a healthcare crisis. Nurses already have the most difficult job imagined and your treatment, lack of support, and respect only make it that much harder. Maybe start by following your "Just Culture Algorithm"
    Shame on you

I worked at Genesis Health System full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good Benefits, ok retirement plan.

    Cons

Managers have no idea how to do the jobs of their employees. Genesis only care about the bottom line and not their employees or the patients. You are treated like a slave, no breaks and only a half hour lunch. The pay and vacation time is laughable. In my opinion the worst healthcare employer in Iowa.

    Advice to Management

Respect your employees. If you are going to be responsible for healthcare professionals you should be one.

    Pros

Coworkers were awesome to work with

    Cons

They need to pay competively, quit demanding 50 hours in a 40 hour work week.

    Advice to Management

Work on getting a union and let this be a great place to work for again.
