I have been working at Genesis HealthCare full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay is decent. Benefits are better than many places at this point in time. No complaints from admin about overtime or not getting done/off on time. Some really good CNAs and nurses. Very good therapists.

    Cons

Old building with seriously outdated electrical wiring, roaches everywhere. Very short staffed. CNAs routinely care for 20 to 30 residents each. Nursing admin attitude negative. No positive feedback at all. More important to blame someone for the problem than to *fix* the problem. Frequent disrespect of employees by superiors/supervisors.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees with respect. Ask your questions, then close your mouth and LISTEN to the answers rather than continuing to talk and blame and find fault. Encourage your employees. Appreciate them and the many, many hours they work to help 'cover' staffing. Talk to the residents. They can tell you which staff members are your hardest workers, most dependable, most compassionate. They can also tell you which staff members are rude and/or have nasty attitudes towards families, residents, and other staff. It's not the administrative nurses who make or break your facility. It's the CNAs and hall nurses who are in the trenches, doing the actual hands-on, day to day care. When you lose them, you have nothing to offer your clientele.

I worked at Genesis HealthCare full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

great coworkers, teamwork, salary and benefits

    Cons

mandatory non-optional increase in work days, secondary to staff shortage;threatened to reduce to every other weekend, part-time, which was to them: "the same as an employee giving notice", if we objected to working more than what was originally agreed upon.

    Advice to Management

Poor management, needs to consider hiring someone with a background in nurse management instead of letting the scheduler direct the nurses and be more involved with what is going on at the facility.

I worked at Genesis HealthCare full-time

    Pros

If you can carve out a nano-second to actually talk to residents you will enjoy them. Some of the management level staff is supportive and willing to lend a hand but they are often as frustrated as the staff on the carts or floor. This leads to a very high turnover rate.

    Cons

Nurses usually have more patient care than they can possibly accomplish in the time you are given yet you are " in trouble" if you work overtime for your shift .Some nurses seem to be solving this problem by signing for work not done. If you try to do things the right way you will be resented by those taking shortcuts. Just try telling one that you will not take a controlled substance that has been taped back into a card. I hate to write this review that might leave the residents with even less care but feel that something needs to be done as the current residents are at risk, High turnover with the DON position might make the management take a look at what is happening.

    Advice to Management

You keep losing nurses because they feel they are unable to do a good job with the amount of work that is required. Good nurses like to feel that they are doing a good job. You need to higher more nurses and give them less residents to care for. Mandatory overtime/double shifts is risky to residents and no way to staff a facility. I stayed long enough to give Genesis and the new DON time to change things but was disappointed in their efforts.
