I have been working at Genocea Biosciences full-time

    Pros

CSO is a world champion scientist

    Cons

    Terrible mid managers
Too many directors and vice presidents-head heavy
Horrible HR; Should get an award for "company with highest employee turnover rate in Boston" and HR doesn't care
~50 people left in the last 6 months including 2 VPs, 3 directors and whole clinical team, never a good sign.
    Small lab spaces
poor pipeline and very low on cash

    Advice to Management

Change should come from the top

I have been working at Genocea Biosciences full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Genocea management from lower to higher truly cares about their employees. Major restructuring last year resulted in no job losses, an impressive feat for a small focused company. True excitement in the organization about the potential for the future. So many opportunities to grow within individuals roles and the company as a whole.

    Cons

Leaving employees lack professionalism and air too many grievances, most of which are the result of lack of experience and maturity about the industry.

    Advice to Management

Continue to voice enthusiasm and build an effective and cohesive team. Make sure voices are heard, new employees bring a wealth of industry experience which will ensure we succeed !

    Pros

You can get involved in almost any area of the company that you'd like. Management trusts hard working employees, which allows for growth and opportunities. People are extremely nice and happy to help you learn and feel comfortable.
The culture is possibly one of the best things about the company. There are a lot of fun events where you can get to know your colleagues. The CEO encourages a fun and hard working environment, and strikes a nice balance between the two. Genocea employees are dedicated to everything they do, including having fun. I can't see myself ever choosing to leave Genocea.

    Cons

The company is growing quick, hopefully the culture remains the same.

    Pros

    The people are wonderful.
    Great Culture.
Genocea is a company that actually cares about the core values and helping people/patients.
    Competitive comp and benefits.
    Fun place to work.

    Cons

Standard growing pains, which are hard to avoid as a small company grows.

    Advice to Management

The culture is amazing, so try to maintain it as the company gets bigger.

"Company lacking a clear path and structure"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Budget is there for fun events and the summer hours have obvious benefits. People are able to keep fun things at work like fish.

    Cons

Human resources is focused on being friendly to whom matters most popularity wise and less focused on making true on the promise to fix the broken elements like when reviews aren't conducted fairly or when managers are just not cut from the proper cloth. 25% or so the company left within mere months of each other.

The CEO is a nice guy and although he has a good head on his shoulders, he needs to see from the employees eyes for once and see that people are sad and unable to stay when it becomes fight or flight.

    Advice to Management

Make good on your promises and stop just protecting management when employees are begging you to see the truth.

    Pros

The company culture is great. People are collaborative and treat each other like family. Perks are very good. There are several fun team events organized by the company. Benefits like tuition and health insurance are pretty good. The science is interesting. The CEO is great and so are other executives.

    Cons

The Directors and senior scientists are reluctant to work on interpersonal issues or to act on a situation involving conflicts. The growth and career development of employees is not given importance and the focus is on getting the job done. Overall the professionalism in the company atmosphere can be better.

I worked at Genocea Biosciences full-time

    Pros

Same level colleagues are highly skilled and personable
    Pay average to well
A genuine feeling that the platform will produce real and useful results in this lifetime

    Cons

Managers have unrealistic expectations for timelines and the amount of work required
The QA/QC department has too much flux to be helpful
Too many people have expectation of being recognized for their work for the number of promotions available. Management needs to hire more worker bees.
Hours can be insane with no respect for work/life balance.

    Advice to Management

Make employee turnover rates a part of management review process, if they are not already.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Genocea Biosciences full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lead candidate, GEN-003, is a good vaccine.

    The platform is sound.

Most personnel are friendly and work very hard.

    Opportunities to cross-train.

    Cons

Research is a dictatorship run by the CSO who manages by intimidation and fear.

CEO and HR are aware of issues in research but do nothing to address it directly with CSO.

Programs are started with little to no thought about why the company is pursuing them, how they will be carried out, and what the outcome will mean.

Researchers are persecuted for producing data that does not show desired results.

    Obedience is rewarded over competence.

    Advice to Management

Put an end to the toxic management practices in research or your organization will cease to function.

    Pros

Small, dynamic company. People are encouraged to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to problems. Fast paced, but my manager is careful to keep expectations/stress levels within reason.

    Cons

Going through some growing pains as the company expands - not enough office or lab space, but people are actively working on solutions.

    Advice to Management

You've hired good people - give them their heads and let them do their jobs!

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Genocea Biosciences full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Employees are dedicated and energetic. Nice approach on the vaccine development industry. The CEO is charismatic, makes people happy to be there. The company values its employees, has good benefits and offers many events to help the employees know each other. I love to go to work, and believe 95% of the other employees do too.

    Cons

After passing public in February 2014, Genocea had to realize that it can not do "Everything", and that in order to do "a lot" it needs more employees, needs to outsource certain projects, etc. As such, we had a difficult transition time, but all gets better already. I have no doubt things will be smoother soon.

    Advice to Management

While projects multiply "upstairs" bodies need to multiply "downstairs".
