I have been working at Genome Sciences Centre full-time

    Pros

Great management team and excellent working environment. The research labs here are constantly generating exciting and interesting findings that contribute to the treatment and cure for cancer. It's fortunate to have an internationally recognized research centre like the GSC here at the province of British Columbia in Canada.

    Cons

Relatively poor career advancement and/or growth.

    Pros

-Location, location, location, its not like its in the middle of a University or something.
-I think it may be a good place if you're early in your career, for advancement look south.

    Cons

    -Very clique
    -Career progression is weak
-can be very 9-5 if thats your thing, thats ok

I have been working at Genome Sciences Centre full-time

    Pros

Great people to work with, great location, fun atmosphere, great benefits, and doing work for a great cause. The best part about my job is knowing the positive impact we are contribute to, and that it is directly affecting the lives of people.

    Cons

The GSC could improve on career development. I feel that there could be better support for employee growth. Talking to people here, I feel that many consider their position as the end of the road in terms of a career. I know that many people are still proud of the work they do and the impact it delivers, but the stagnant career development has potentially draining effects to their enthusiasm. This job needs to be more than just a good benefits package. To continue to be a world leader in genomics, this job cannot be just a 9 - 5 for people. Everyone, from management to lab techs, need to feel challenged but also proud of their work, and I feel that this mindset is in short supply.

    Advice to Management

In my opinion, rewarding hard work and positive results is one way of inspiring enthusiasm in people's work. I think there is potentially too much stock in celebrating lengthy service. Instead, why not try an 'employee of the year award'? Doesn't need to be a salary bonus or anything (although that would be nice), but maybe a sheet of paper with an honest remark that highlights what this individual did that was beyond expectations.

Secondly, I wish there was better communication between directors and employees. The last GSC meeting was a start where people could put in anonymous questions, but I feel the answers are a little canned and sometimes sidestepped the real questions people had. But I do acknowledge that this last meeting is a step towards better communication.
