I have been working at Genoptix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Management really works hard at communicating and breaking down both vertical and horizontal silos. People are also recognized and valued for their achievements.

    Cons

Sometimes it feels like we lack long term strategy, decisions are reactionary, but it's understandable since the industry landscape is always shifting.

I have been working at Genoptix full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, quality diagnostics for patients, great exposure to multiple technologies in the oncology field, exciting cutting edge tests, located in a nice area

    Cons

Pay is totally non-competitive compared to other local biotech companies, huge turn-over rate, too many politics, you work hard with very little if any upward mobility, outside people are hired at higher levels instead of promoting from within the qualified ranks, sudden and morale-lowering layoffs...it used to be a great lab serving a special niche in the cancer diagnostics industry. Then it was bought by Novartis and everything went downhill for the employees. The lab was still focused on patients (thank goodness), but the care for employees plummeted heavily. Now that Genoptix is not part of Novartis, it will probably get better, but it's a sinking ship until things turn around in a big way.

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees to do their job with little micromanaging. Acknowledge their efforts personally instead of chastising them publicly for errors that are sure to happen anyway in a poorly managed lab. Improve communication ten fold. Build an environment of trust to boost morale, not a culture of constant criticism. Anticipate issues before they happen instead of constantly putting out fires. Give your staff the benefit of the doubt--never put your staff under the bus.

    Pros

salaries and benefits were competitive until we were bought

    Advice to Management

understand business and culture before cutting staff

I have been working at Genoptix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Incredible corporate culture, positive people, management is fantastic, and a "work hard play hard" mentality which everyone shares. The focus on culture and keeping employees happy translates into very low turnover, and the business has been growing because of the ability to keep top talent with very competitive salaries, great health care benefits, and creating an environment where employees can thrive.

    Cons

Carlsbad (and San Diego in general) can be expensive to live. Housing is a cheaper further inland, but this obviously increases commute times.

    Advice to Management

Obviously no place is perfect, but this place is perfect for me. Management seems very focused on getting the job done right, and of course, the focus on maintaining a very positive culture is a huge bonus. So keep up the good work!

I worked at Genoptix full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Innovative technology, nice facilities and buildings, young atmosphere and culture, free fitness classes, free lunch once a month. Good first job.

    Cons

Management was inept and did not understand technology. Decisions made top-down. No opportunity for career growth. Far commute and tues-sat shift.

    Advice to Management

Allow staff to explore other areas of the business or laboratory to develop more well-rounded scientists. Will help keep staff motivated and empowered

    Pros

The innovation here amazes me! Very high caliber researchers and development talent. We share a passion to work hard and cure cancer

    Cons

Promotion and growth as we are a smaller boutique lab and not a lot of opportunity to grow

    Advice to Management

My current managers are extremely helpful and provide an "open door" culture l

I have been working at Genoptix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work hard, play hard. You must be willing to adapt with great speed, make use of your full mental and professional capabilities and understand that every minute counts in the efforts being lead against cancer.

    Cons

The business has grown faster than the core, which means everyone is working at least at 150%.

    Advice to Management

We need to expand the core, but not just hiring anyone. We need to continue hiring the best.

    Pros

Technology, people, process are all solid. Financials are still good. They continue to roll out new products while making the current one's stronger. Excellent account managers

    Cons

Reimbursements have gone down for everyone in the industry, Novartis came in and made a lot of changes to regions, roles, pay, etc....not all of them good or welcome. A lot of turnover. Job is tough but rewarding. Tina Nova is not there anymore.
