I worked at Gensler full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

A great place to start a career since there are many junior level employees

    Cons

Project Managers and Studio Principals can be more concerned with internal politics than quality of work. Design directors and Project Managers tend to perpetuate the division between "technical" and "design" members of each team.

    Advice to Management

Allow junior employees to explore more senior roles outside of the typical paths. Some of the most talented designers are pigeon-holed by the title of Job Captain into strictly technical roles.

I worked at Gensler full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Young staff, lots of buzz, good benefits & pay.

    Cons

Too many ambiguous titles, very hierarchical and corporate. Projects are overstaffed and often over budget. Project managers are not respected or empowered and are blamed for project metrics. Most of the staff are "designers" who have no idea how buildings are built, or any other "non-design" related tasks, its' beneath their self-anointed brilliance. It's a passive aggressive...

I worked at Gensler full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

You can excel and flourish if you're able to secure a mentor of a Design Director to take you under their wing. Great access to events throughout the city as all the reps want you to spec their products.

    Cons

Even if you have mentors and advocates and years of great reviews "professional development plans", one person high up "doesn't get you" and you're gone. Layoffs are still far too frequent in times where the project managers can't get their house in order. Budgets are still dealt with office to office and it's still hard to collaborate cross-office.

    Advice to Management

Don't let managing principles force studio leaders to let people go based off of their personal feelings and insecurities.

    Pros

LA Office - Great lower and intermediate staff, some but not many good upper level senior associates and partners. Barbara Bouza is a good one, can't say the same for the other two who will be running the office.

    Cons

Upper management is only looking out for themselves and the bonuses from bringing in work. Will underbid projects to get their bonuses. Will put the responsibility on the project managers and staff to get the project completed resulting often in massive unpaid overtime. They will then bill hours at a partners rate to the job weekly although they do little to nothing just so...

I have been working at Gensler full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I was able to join Gensler through an employee referral during a time when the company was getting swamped with work so they were willing to take on any help they can get. I just graduated college with a B. Arch. While i've had internships every summer, I didn't have much (or at all) technical experience. Gensler gives you a really good mix of projects in various stages of the design process (schematic design, construction...

    Cons

Sometimes you really get swamped with tons of work and deadlines. It's definitely NOT a sink-or-swim work environment, but by being surrounded by so many motivated people who are devoted to their work, you end up feeling pressured to try to work just as hard, if not harder than anyone else (my personal experience, at least). Project managers rarely say no to projects because...

I have been working at Gensler full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Amazing work environment, fun people, lots of company sponsored events. Wine downs after work once a month, where you are encouraged to get buzzed with your co-workers. Fulfilling sense of development and plenty of access to professional development resources

    Cons

Enforcing Accounting standards at Gensler is somewhat of an exercise in futility because invoicing drives revenue, and project managers subjectively drive invoicing. Lots of work (regular hours, not long though) can feel overwhelming at times but thats normal for accounting.

    Advice to Management

Maintain the status quo, Its a great place to work.

Little room for advancement, unless you're a brown-noser Hard to switch projects/ types/ roles in studios (they highly promote this in interviews) Project managers plays favorites, won't listen to other's opinions Very profit driven, Project managers care more about the project budget than employees Inadequate training Lack of...

I have been working at Gensler full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

It is a well oiled machine and there is strength in numbers. Knowing that there are over 40 offices worldwide and the reach that has with both clientele and colleagues is a definite pro. There is a strong brand and a community. The size and reputation does attract some great clientele as well and with those are some global possibilities.

    Cons

The size of the NY office has become too big and impersonal unfortunate and since the last recession, leadership has preferred to take on almost all work that comes it's way without consideration of the staff. There is a tendency by leadership and project managers to say yes to incredibly tight schedules and budgets without understanding how the work actually gets done. There...

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes and really see the true talent you have and nourish it. Cultivate it. Stop squashing it with being safe. Stop judging by appearance and background. Yes, you do that. Understand that True Leadership is wanting and helping and inspiring those around you and those that work for you is what this is. You are only as successful as those that work for you are.

      Pros

Great people to work with, various opportunities if you are in the right studio, office is filled with type a overachievers

      Cons

Difficult to advance, work life balance is grossly out of wack, client expectations are not managed by the project managers. While they boast opportunities to move around the company and within studios to find your fit- this can be a political nightmare. Expect to work 60 hours a week the first couple of years until you have proven yourself. They also expect you to take on internal...
