I have been working at Gentex (Michigan) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work is mindless, easy. Can listen to headphones to prevent dying of boredom.

    Cons

Support staff mostly sits in the office watching youtube all day. Rules enforced inconsistently. They will get you to perform work above your pay grade by promising promotions, then after a year or so will say you're "unqualified" for an official promotion to the job you've already been doing, but will ask you to continue doing it at your current pay because you're doing a great job. I've literally heard support staff say they only want the job because it makes them feel like they're better than line workers. About 15% of your pay is tied to company performance, but you'll have to watch in frustration as management wastes money by having 2-3 people perform the job that could be done by one person, and support spending 5-6 hours a day playing on phones or in the office. Safety is non existent. I watched someone vandalize my car in the parking lot, but they said I had no proof, so nothing happened. I've been hit in the face with broken glass several times because of co-workers throwing or punching glass for some reason. The whole place is a joke.

    Advice to Management

The company philosophy is great, you just have to follow it. If you're not willing to enforce your own policies consistently, get rid of them. You're just begging for a discrimination lawsuit by allowing some people to break rules while disciplining others for the same acts.

I worked at Gentex (Michigan) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They have their quarterly bonus which is their one seemingly redeeming quality. A set schedule is nice for those transitioning out of retail.

    Cons

Management is horrible at listening to their workers. The bonus is a tool designed to keep wages low. The ceo is losing his mind. No opporunity for advancement without a technical degree.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees. Raise base pay. Allow for advancement without degrees. Don't put people who think they will be engineers is supervisor positions not doing any engineering since it leaves them bitter and they take it out on their workers.

    Pros

air-conditioned plant, clean, but I do not favor cheap unhealthy soft drinks.

    Cons

IF YOU WANT TO QUIT, JUST QUIT , DONT GIVE THEM ADVANCE NOTICE, OTHERIWSE THEY WILL TREAT YOU LIKE A CRIMINAL. A WORLD CLASS ORGANIZATION WOULD NOT TREAT EMPLOYEES THAT WAY! BE WARNED.!

    Advice to Management

Fred runs a tight ship, as long as he's leading, Gentex will grow. But his captains are very bad. They create hostile environment not suitable for long term employments.

    Pros

Pay was decent, profit sharing if your actually hired on and not a temp. Air conditioning. You can listen to music all day if you want.

    Cons

You will be hired in as a temp to start. They will tell you 3-4 months, which in reality is 6+ months. You receive no benefits during this time, and are not allowed to miss any days. You are also not included in the profit sharing until you hired in (if at all). I was brought in with 4 other temps, all of us were gone by 6 months. We were told they didn't know when they would be hiring anymore employees. Some of the employees on the later shift are pretty sketchy. You WILL work overtime. Expect to work 6-7 days a week.

I worked at Gentex (Michigan) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Comfortable office and lunch areas, free coffee and soft drinks, onsite employee gym and work flexibility for salaried employees.

    Cons

If you're not part of the "Good Old Boys" club don't count on getting anywhere in the company. Not vebally stated but implied and expected to not rock the boat or question anyone part of the "Good Old Boys" club. Doesn't matter how wrong or what proof one may have. Management will typically double-cross others to save themselves. Fred did a wonderful job getting the company off the ground and growing with a great team but management in place now is running things...not Fred unfortunately though he still resides in his corner office. Management has been known to instruct individuals to withhold information from Fred so they can run things unbeknownst to Fred and the running joke is that they like to make him think he's running things still. It's a sad day at what use to be a great company and former great management team. Oh and the salary is very poor in comparison to that of other companies.

    Advice to Management

Fred should really scrutinize the intentions and actions of the VP sitting next to him. How many exceptional, faithful and contributing employees must be walked / forced out before Fred realizes what's going on?

I worked at Gentex (Michigan) full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

3 weeks vacation is nice, but pretty standard. The health care was pretty decent. Bonus paid out quarterly with a drawback of a low starting salary. Talk of a non hierarchical structure (CEO will talk with you, everybody is "equal").

    Cons

With the quarterly bonus based on performance and company standing, your starting salary is around 8-10 per ent lower than similar jobs. The lack of structure is pretty crazy. Seems like mostly younger crowd, kind of concerning for those above 40. The management, at least in the department I worked in was not focused on helping employees expand and focus their career. Surprisingly very cliquey for a professional organization. Lack of training and support for new team members. Experience by fire fighting technique without support. Everything (sw and hw) developed in house, which is fine to an extent but very new user unfriendly without support.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your employees. Transitioning to a new position is sometimes difficult. This goes for employees too.

I worked at Gentex (Michigan) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Free pop.
    Company Picnics.
    Nice facility.
    Nice worker bees.

    Cons

Low pay and your job evaporates if you make a base of $80k and are between 45 - 55.
Poor upper management, they completely missed the European slow down and the futility of banking on the KTSA.
Politics, politics, politics. Most managers have their jobs due to exaggerated accomplishments and always saying Yes.
No future products in the pipeline.

    Advice to Management

Ditch the managers that rolled in with the fogg as they have turned the company into a fear driven, rump smooching, below average company.
