    Pros

Growing company, lots of encouragement, not your typical insurance company. You can really have an impact here. It is an amazing culture of change, and I think the IPO had a lot to do with that. You get the stability of a long-standing Fortune 500 company, with the freedom and flexibility of a startup.

    Cons

The company is still trying to figure out where it is headed, and the vision is still shaping up. That makes a lot of people uncomfortable, but there are very positive headwinds.

    Advice to Management

Take more risks, let go of "old school" thinking. Need to be more decisive - seems like we tiptoe around tough issues, rather than make the big calls

"A place to build a career, good compensation, ok benefits, but slow on decisions"

    Pros

Build a career, not just do a job - great opportunities to advance.
My manager is a great coach and mentor.
Good compensation - they are competitive.
I have challenging and meaningful work - I feel what I do makes a positive impact to our customers.

    Cons

Decision making is slow... very risk averse company and too many decisions without a clear end approver.
Lack of empowerment to make independent decisions (again, risk averse Insurance company mentality.... unfortunately the culture sometimes rewards inaction and overanalyzing)

    Advice to Management

Overall, I am very happy working for Genworth Financial and have been here for many years. Genworth does a great job of giving people a career, not just a job. We also focus a lot of energy on development strong people managers, which is great.

Where I would love Genworth to focus improvement on is being less controlling and centralized, give employees more power to do their jobs and not have to get approval from 20 people and 3 committees on simple things. Also, please stop rewarding the nay-saying overanalyzers and look to encourage the why-nots.

I have been working at Genworth full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work/Life balance is great. Flex schedule is pretty common. Benefits are great. People are friendly and smart

    Cons

Fear of layoffs, unclear sense of direction from upper management, and a little bit too much red tape at times

    Advice to Management

give your employees a strong sense of direction and take layoffs off the table. You do over 10 billion in annual revenues and only have 6500 Full Time Employees. Genworth is already pretty lean and mean

I have been working at Genworth full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible work hours, as long as you can get the work done clocking in and out isn't required.
New Opportunities come up all the time so there are new skills to be learned often and to help your carreer path.
Management listens to my ideas and responds well.
    Good Overall Benefits Package

    Cons

The Medical Benefit Choices are very limited. This is a company headquartered in the Eastern United States so there is no Kaiser for us here. Would like to have more choices for Medical Providers like Kaiser.

    Advice to Management

    Get more Medical Plan choices.

    Pros

Fortunate to have 2 great managers to work for. Most employees loved working here so much that most new-hires were by internal referrals. Focused on keeping employees happy and healthy.

    Cons

Upper management decisions on weathering economic downturn resulted in layoff-rehire-layoff strategy. Not a good work environment.

    Advice to Management

Handle employee status with more stability.
