I have been working at George Junior Republic full-time

    Pros

None except you get to try to help youth see that there is a better way to live.

    Cons

Extremely low pay, company wants you to know everything and make no mistakes, but they don't pay nearly enough, it's a revolving door

    Advice to Management

Pay the staff you have now instead of always training new staff. I think it would help the youth to know the staff instead of always seeing new faces.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at George Junior Republic full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Plenty of overtime if you are willing to work.
    Some room for advancement.
If you are an authoritarian type individual then you will do well.

    Cons

Management is conflicted in the direction they want to go. They want the prestige of having college educated direct care staff, but they have a warm body policy that hires based on need rather than aptitude.
Health Insurance Premiums keep going up, but pay doesn't. Value of health care is also diminishing.
To be acknowledged you have to put in effort far beyond what most people are willing to do, especially if you have a family.

    Advice to Management

Some in management have climbed to the top from the bottom, but they are few and seem to be the only ones that can empathize with those at the bottom. Employee recognition is not a term that easily flows of the tongue of many in management, unless it's amongst themselves.

I worked at George Junior Republic part-time

    Pros

The youth are great. With the right guidance they have so much potential. Free scheduling is another plus. You set your own hours.

    Cons

The staff is very negative and judgmental, at times even racist, to the youth. They are also very negative towards each other. Not a healthy working environment.

    Advice to Management

Model the behavior you want to see in your staff. Be transparent with them. It starts from the top and rolls downhill. The behaviors you condone in your staff, they have learned from you.

I worked at George Junior Republic part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I really liked my coworkers for the most part. Working with the youth was always interesting, and I was never bored. We got to make our own schedules, that was the best part.

    Cons

I absolutely despised most of the management. Two of the four bosses there are probably the worst bosses I've ever had. They will belittle you and make you feel like you are nothing to them. There is an insane turn over rate, which truly goes to show how terrible of a job it is.

I worked at George Junior Republic part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I really enjoyed working with the youth. I gained a lot of knowledge about the population of kids there but also about myself. The job was relatively easy. You get to make your own schedule - best part!!

    Cons

I absolutely did not get along with two of my bosses so it made my work environment very uncomfortable. There was also a lot of gossip and petty conversation between my staff and bosses, very unprofessional. I shouldn't feel nervous about seeing or interacting with my bosses.

  10. "GJR"

    Star Star Star Star Star

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Archbald, PA

I have been working at George Junior Republic (More than a year)

    Pros

GJR has Supportive and knowledgeable employees. Offer trainings on a regular basis so staff can continue to learn new and up to date information. GJR has good benefits and pay well.

    Cons

The main GJR facility is 4 hours away so makes communication a little more difficult at times. There is a lot of travel which leads to wear and tear on your personal vehicle. You are given monthly mileage and car maintains stipends but it doesn't cover it.

    Advice to Management

Do to the distance between employees and the main office, more phone or in person contact would sometimes be helpful.
