I worked at George Lucas Educational Foundation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The mission and culture of GLEF attract knowledgeable, positive, passionate individuals who truly care about the mission of advancing progressive educational ideas and practices, and who are a credit to the Edutopia and Lucas Education Research brands. The team is warm and inclusive, professional development opportunities are ample, the benefits are generous (both the standard package and the perks of daily life at Skywalker Ranch), and the location is magical. Every day, you are involved in a purposeful mission for social good, directly affecting a community that is excited by what you do.

    Cons

For a small organization that values its climate of inclusive community, the senior management often seems disconnected from daily activities and slow to communicate its intentions to rank-and-file employees. One major caveat for anyone interested in working at GLEF: owning your duties and performing them to the best of your abilities (even when that's above and beyond expectations) may not be enough to guarantee long-term job security. If you don't adequately demonstrate an interest in growing beyond your job title, your skills may be perceived as limited and ultimately expendable.

I worked at George Lucas Educational Foundation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

-The most powerful education K-12 brand on social media. Tremendous reach.
-Impact of the content created is seen EVERY day with educators, students, and parents.
-Passionate people. Tons of selfless and talented folks making a difference in education.
-Top notch facilities and TONS of perks.
-Overall has sufficient resources to accomplish additional initiatives. I worked with top-notch consultants and learned a ton from them.
-Inspiring board members and executive leadership
-They recognize, cultivate talent, and challenge you to grow.
-Recognizable brand name (Both George Lucas Edu Fdn + Edutopia)
-Great place to be exposed to Web development, video crews, social media, and editorial folks. Great cross-functional team experience (exposed to many different thinkers)
    -Flexible work-from-home day on Thursdays
-Extra professional development for those that take advantage of it (conferences, coaches, courses etc.)
-GREAT benefits (best I've had hands down)

    Cons

-Location is very isolated (impossible to run errands and/or have a quick meeting with someone)
-Has a history of not strategically saying no to many initiatives but I know there's a strategic plan in place to resolve this.
-The Web/Media landscape is changing fast and Edutopia is changing with them. They could benefit on being more transparent at times to alleviate any unease with all of these changes.

    Advice to Management

-Connect to your impact as much as possible. Tell that story all of the time (and in a myriad of ways) to inspire not only the internal team, but the education community at-large.
-Keep users front and center with all decisions (design thinking, user-testing) to ensure resources and technology created are as useful as possible to your audience.
-Keep developing edutopia.org to be more modern and user-friendly, so more people can experience the great resources on their mobile devices.

"Great place to work if you are passionate about improving K-12 education with digital media"

    StarStarStarStarStar

I have been working at George Lucas Educational Foundation full-time

    Pros

Edutopia is a division of the George Lucas Educational Foundation with a powerful mission that is critical to the future of K-12 education in the U.S. It's a fast-paced culture that feels more like a start-up than a non-profit. In recent years, Edutopia has grown to be one of the leading brands in education and it's an exciting time as we hear stories from people who value our materials and use them to help their local schools.

    Cons

Edutopia has taken on more work than they have people for at present but the company has just rolled out a new strategic plan that will hopefully alleviate some of the staff who feel overloaded.

    Advice to Management

Edutopia is constantly changing to respond to the new media landscape. It's exciting but it can be frustrating to someone who wants clear direction and systems and processes in place.

I worked at George Lucas Educational Foundation as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Ample resources, a quality brand (Edutopia), highly-qualified staff and gorgeous offices. Biggest pro: it opens doors for future employment.

    Cons

Uncertainty about where Edutopia is going and whether it can remain relevant. Poor staff communication. Also, senior staff and content team are remarkably undiverse -- no people of color.

    Advice to Management

    (1) Improve staff communication (2) Staff diversity creates content diversity, and could make your product more relevant.

    Pros

Edutopia and GLEF are leading brands in education

GLEF does important, high quality work to showcase best practices in K-12 education

GLEF has an incredibly talented, fun team of people to work with

    Beautiful offices; flex schedules

    Cons

Over the past few years, there have been lots of changes as GLEF shifted its focus to 100% Internet distribution.

Unfortunately, this has resulted in staff turn-over and some disgruntled employees.

Also, the majority of Internet-savvy staff could be making higher salaries at other companies; many took steep paycuts for the opportunity to work at GLEF
