    Pros

    Good vacation. Good retirement match

    Cons

When. Your manager changes, and they do things differently than the previous one, you are criticized for doing your job the same way. They want to run you off.

    Advice to Management

Check out what managers are saying about their staff. Do not take their word for it. You are losing valuable talent.

    Pros

Somewhat secure job even after a round of layoffs. If you want a slow-paced 9-5 job that doesn't require your skills or knowledge to be bleeding edge then this is a great place to check out.

    Cons

The organization is pretty monolithic and slow moving, projects commonly extend out to 12 months with an average of 6 and are initiated without truly evaluating organizational need. License hoarding is common (purchasing licenses for "cool stuff", but not implementing the products even after a year or more of ownership). Expect to work without a budget in mind, you're given productivity tools as a surprise rather than asked to participate in tool selection (it's usually been purchased 6-12 months before you know it's coming). Organizational groups under the same manager will often be competing and at odds with eachother. You're encouraged to say "Yes." to the customer rather than being realistically helpful. The organization bills and sells services to itself for a higher rate than external service providers. Given the organization structure, there are no promotion paths ... You must hang around and hope that better positions open, people retire, or are fired to move up.

    Advice to Management

Suck up the pain of another round of non-budget related layoffs (trim the fat). Merge teams that overlap in responsibility ... there's a ton of opportunity here whether or not you believe it. Enhance the pay/benefits to be competitive with tech startups for the IT side. Consider contracting developers to start porting all your applications into cloud environments.

I worked at George Washington University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Got my own office, had flexible holiday schedules, most of the time I worked on my own without anyone in the office.

    Cons

Disconnect to other departments, it is like a government no one wants to take responsibility for a situation. Most times you can not even reach others within the university to resolve an issue which can be frustrating.

    Advice to Management

More direction for the job and duties would be good.

I worked at George Washington University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The employee benefits are great, with very low tuition if you plan to attend school, along with medical, vision, eye, and dental. The only catch is that the degree that you are pursuing must be related to your position, or you will have to cover the costs of taxes, which can add up and are taken out of your check.

    Cons

The leadership and management in this position want people who take orders and are submissive to the demands of a tyrannical supervisor. Micro managing is a true understatement in this position at GW. Not to mention, important or beneficial information is withheld from employees until after the fact. The lack of communication and treatment of employees under the conditions that I've mentioned are what make this place an absolute NO if you are looking for employment within the Registrar's Office.

    Advice to Management

The actual registrar should highly consider new management. The turn over rate within this office is astronomical! And it is very sad that the same leadership that runs good employees away still remains in their position. Anyone who works in this office or has worked in this office knows the exact person that is causing the negative reviews and feedback of The Office of the Registrar at George Washington University, but does nothing or says nothing about it.
