I have been working at Georgia Tech full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Georgia Tech is a world class university. The students are motivated and very smart. Atlanta is an ideal location. I highly recommend Georgia Tech as a place to work.

    Cons

Sometimes decisions take longer than in a business environment. Academics are not used as to managing people and non performing individuals may not be addressed as quickly as in a business environment.

I worked at Georgia Tech full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Excellent facilities
    - Excellent quality of undergraduate students
    - Largest engineering school in the country has expertise in virtually all areas of science and engineering one can imagine

    Cons

    - Graduate student quality is lower on average than you would expect given the national ranking of the school
    - University fails to properly value its people over time, and concept of value is based on ability to go out and get offers from other schools (at which point ethical individuals will take those offers and leave rather than use them as a bargaining tool)
-Upper administration has a business model view of the university and continues to want to take larger percentages of funding without really returning value to the faculty researchers generating the overhead
    - Has de-emphasized undergraduate education to continue to push the research mission
    - Current highest level administration seems to lack direction and initiatives
    - Faculty growth and advancement difficult given the environment

    Advice to Management

Rebalance efforts between undergraduate and graduate education. Make sure that faculty generating overhead see some form of overhead return to directly support their programs in areas where direct funding is difficult (e.g. maintain equipment infrastructure).

I have been working at Georgia Tech full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

This gives you visibility in research.

    Cons

Should transition into an industry/academic job within 1-2 years. Most of the time, the professors you are working with will bounce you of ideas so that they can write new project proposals. The funding can stop anytime, and be prepared for this. Start looking for new opportunities by connecting with researchers/industry etc.

    Advice to Management

    Nothing.
