I worked at Germaine Lawrence full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    there once were many: creative,
Innovative lace where you could make a work "family ". Not sure how much remains since takeover by larger agency.

    Cons

Large bureaucratic agency where individual voice is a bit lost.ust follow all the rules which seem rigid.

    Advice to Management

    Learn to grow and change.

I have been working at Germaine Lawrence full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great experience working with at-risk adolescents and learning about trauma informed care. Work with team members can be rewarding.

    Cons

Work with the clients is challenging and can be gratifying. However, management does not provide a consistent, well organized environment that ensures stability in the milieu. Staffing is often a challenge and qualified employees are not readily hired for needed positions.

    Pros

Support among colleagues is great (at least it was when I was there!), Compensation is similar to other positions in the same field. Physical work environment is pleasant and comfortable

    Cons

The population of students can be really difficult to work with. Administration seemed out of touch with the needs of day to day workers. Staffing is decreased during the night which sometimes made work harder.

    Advice to Management

Spend a few days every few months taking on the role of the support staff, or at least work alongside them. See what people have to go through.

    Pros

Good experience working with adolescents, good training and education about mental health, good opportunity to see a wide range of emotional and behavioral disorders.

    Cons

Young, often cliquey staff. Young inexperienced leadership at the Residential Director level. Agency is not forthcoming about job responsibilities at time of interview. Culture not supportive to staff having difficulties.

    Advice to Management

Hire older and more experienced/educated leadership. Screen potential residential staff more carefully and be more forthcoming about job responsibilites and hours.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

Young staff, very flexible scheduling, lots of time off, understanding around "mental health" days

    Cons

Exceedingly cliquey, difficult to advance, young management with no prior experience calling all the shots, taking lots of students that will never meet their treatment goals, crisis assaults without the qualified staff to handle the situations

    Advice to Management

Don't just promote to promote - make sure your supervisors actually have the knowledge and experience to progress. Bumping up recent grads with no prior experience leads to lots of messy - and dangerous - situations.

    Cons

Low salary. High turnover. Its a tough segment to work in overall. They did their best to make it a good working environment.
